My name is Henry Jahonga and I'm a teacher at a school known as Anointed Community Center.
The school is located in Matunda, KENYA and has a population of 200 students.
The school has had a slow start with lots of hiccups. The school was started in 2015. Initially, we did not have any place for the children to study. We used to teach them under trees.
However, by the grace of God, we were given a piece of land where were able to build our first classroom.
Here is a video we made during the first days of the school:
(this was way back in 2015 when we were building our first classrooms)
The classrooms are nothing fancy but we are grateful that the children have somewhere to shelter and learn. You should see the joy that the kids have when they are in school!
(And this is now, 2018)
We have weathered storms to enable the children in our community get an education.
However, more still needs to be done. And this is why we invite you to help us purchasing school supplies, in particular, textbooks.
About half of the pupils in our school come from very poor, rural backgrounds. Poverty is everywhere in our communities. We also have a number of orphan students that are supported by the school and well-wishers.
Despite the hard conditions and environment that our children live in, their desire and hunger for education cannot be denied. As a teacher, I see it every time I am in the classroom.
The children are always eager to learn more, are joyful and participate in class discussions.
Our main goal at this time is to purchase textbooks for the children to help them with their studies. As a teacher, I can only do so much to teach in class. But without textbooks, understanding even the most basic concepts can be quite difficult.
Since we started the school, we have not had any textbooks for the pupils. Only the teachers have textbooks. We want to change this to improve the learning experience for the kids and give them a fair chance in life through education
We would like to purchase textbooks for students in Class 1 (Grade1) up to Class 4 (Grade 4). In Kenya, primary school pupils learn a total of 5 examinable subjects. Therefore, the total number of textbooks we would need would be 1000 (250 for each grade)
Below is an itemized list of our textbook requirements.
i) Grade 1 textbooks - 250
ii) Grade 2 textbooks - 250
iii) Grade 3 textbooks - 250
iv) Grade 4 textbooks - 250
Each Grade 1 and 2 textbook costs approximately $4 while Grade 3 and 4 textbooks prices range from $5 to $10.
In total, we would need $2000 for Grade 1 and 2 Textbooks and $3000 for Grade 3 and 4 textbooks
The textbooks will give our school the foundation it needs to mould these children, equip them with the knowledge to improve their chances of escaping the vicious cycle of poverty in the community.
We will be very grateful to everyone that supports our initiative to educate these children and help them make it in life.
I will be posting regular updates about the kids and the school with regards to this fundraiser.
Thank you everyone for your support!
