All my life, I have lived in this environment of real need and and it gave me the motivation unlike the remaining over 98%  of the children who are born and grows up here. I am now out of the environment and I know I was born to make it better. I am David Maduri, currently studying at EARTH University, Costa Rica under a full scholarship from the MasterCard Foundation, I am a Kenyan who hails from the North Eastern shores of the Lake Victoria. All my life, all my education and everything that has been of me for the last 20 years is defined by this environment which hides beauty and touristic characteristics but the reality of life describes a sad story of its own. That is the Uhundha community, which hosts abundance of wildlife, lush vegetation, gorgeous sunsets and sunrises, and some of the most beautiful smiles I have ever seen!  On the other hand, there is no electricity, no cars or motorbikes, no clean water, no system for waste and sewage (which crazily pollutes the water where their livelihood, the tilapia and the Nile perch, comes from), there is no trust in one another, no shoes, no lunches and no decent clothes for the kids, they wear some dirty and ready-to-retire uniforms that have been in circulation for longer than the wildly fluctuating Kenyan Shilling. Shacks are built of manure or corrugated iron sheets and random found-and-resurrected bits and bobs. There are about two bicycles (from a different century), dirt tracks that get flooded and impossible to go through after a big rain, there are witch doctors with their wacky rituals, there is HIV left and right, polygamy and widow-inheritance which, of course, do not help HIV, there are qualified but frustrated and demotivated teachers who will wonder for the rest of their days why they spent so much money and time on college when they will never make it back unless they become headmasters and will be in the position to play with government and charity money (!!) (imagine the impact of this on educating the kids). There are some wild ideas on life and existence, there are some very unusual beliefs, rituals, customs (some of which only contribute to the health issues), there is no motivation, there are no ideas or inspiration and if there is a spark of inspiration, there is no one to implement the ideas. Most people dream only about simple survival. Imagination is nearly dead. Everything stands still, frozen in time. Health I know is one of the most clear signs of continuation of existance. In my community, there exists no toilets. I can guess how dramatic it may sound but that is basically it. People use the bush. When it rains, all the dirt goes back to the lake. Each morning, almost every family goes veryearly to fetch the water water which they believe is always clan in the morning. Here, literally people live by miracles. I wish you help me create a helthier community. Thank you so much in advance, David
