Campaign Story
My name is Stephen Lemeris Twala, I am Maasai from Maji-moto, a small village bordering the world famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya. I am the first born in a family of 8 of humble economic background. In account of which most of my schooling was made possible through the generous support of well-wishers. Through this support, I completed a bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the University of Nairobi in 2014. Soon after my graduation my father got involved in an accident, leaving him unable to cater for my siblings and putting that responsibility on my shoulders.
The community I come from is plagued by poverty and lack of access to essential services particularly, adequate health services. Being the first one ever to qualify as a health care provider in my village I got an opportunity to work in a rural facility within it. I got firsthand experience on the myriad of health challenges that are keeping the community from attaining and sustaining well-being. These experience rekindled my long held dream to become a medical doctor, as I believe I will then be in a position to contribute towards the alleviation of challenges associated with preventable and curable illnesses within my community and ultimately to well-being; in addition to securing a more reliable support for my extended family. Last year, I made the first step towards making this dream a reality, when I started my first year at medical school, studying Medicine and Surgery at the University of Nairobi.
However, as I’m approaching the second year, my dream risks coming to a halt as I only managed to fund the first academic year with the little savings I had made from my nursing career. My pre-established plans to finance my medical degree, were thwarted by a ravaging drought, in which my investment of a small gravity-fed irrigated tomatoes farm was scorched to death by the blistering heat associated with climate change. In order to continue with my studies, I need close to $5000 per year as tuition fees and the entire course will take a period of six academic years with a similar amount as tuition fee per academic year. It is on account of these disabling unfortunate circumstances and personal aspirations, that I am compelled to reach-out to you and other well-wishers seeking support towards bringing this my dream to fruition. I will appreciate any amount you are able to donate. In return, I promise you that with my education and skills, I will help to tackle the health challenges facing my community and Kenyans at large.
