Campaign Story
This initiative will go towards buying medical supplies for the mobile medical brigades that are giving medical attention to the students being attacked by the Nicaraguan government.
For those of you that do not know the situation
On April 16th 2018, the government announced a reform to the NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SECURITY (INSS) for employees and employers. INSS has repeatedly been accused of being the personal piggy bank of the government, approving millions of dollars in private loans.
On April 18th 2018, a peaceful protest took place at Camino de Oriente . However, protesters were attacked by a government sponsored group (known as Juventud Sandinista or JS) and paramilitary forces with extreme force. The violent attacks were moved to the University UCA, where students and activist took cover while the JS attacked them and vandalized the university. Protesters were badly hurt, cameras from independent news media where stolen.
On April 19th 2018, other universities in Managua joined the protest against the recent INSS reform and the violent response from the government. The government increased their level of violence resulting in five registered deaths. Including a 15th year old boy, Alvaro Conrado, whose only crime was to take water to the students. What followed would become the most violent days of the country in recent history.
Thanks to a public outcry and social media, Inter-American Commission on Human Rights came to Nicaragua. The observations of the IACHR are based on "hundreds" of testimonies that the agency compiled in the country between May 17 and May 20 in Managua, Masaya, León and Matagalpa and which show serious human rights violations during a month of protests. At the moment of their visit 76 people had been killed, 868 injured and 438 illegally detained.
As of May 28 the number of deaths has risen to 89. For over 40 days the citizens of Nicaragua have held peaceful protests, and for over 40 days the government has attacked us, shooting to kill.
The brave doctors of the mobile medical brigades go wherever the attacks are taking place, trying to help those that get injured, risking their life for a better tomorrow. The money donated will serve to buy medical supplies for them.
Every bit counts and is greatly appreciated!
