Carmen's Progress

Update posted by Carmen AndFriends

Yesterday, Carmen's doctor gave her wonderful news that her CT scan looked "fantastic!" This means that Carmen is beginning to wean herself off the brace for the first time since January. She is very excited to be able to wear nice clothes again instead of tee shirts and yoga pants every day. :)

This isn't the end of the good news, though! Carmen originally was told that she would have to wait till August 14th to do the training and assessment that comes with equipping a handicap accessible vehicle. However, Ellen made a phone call to the gentleman who assisted Carmen when she first started driving at 16, and Carmen is going to be able to get her appointment in this Saturday instead of waiting a month and a half!

Even MORE good news is that Carmen and her family have scouted out a vehicle! It's a 2004 Town & Country with 32,000 miles on it. It also has been modified to include a handicap accessible ramp already! Carmen will still need to get the vehicle modified for driving controls, but having the ramp is a good start. The vehicle is listed at $19,900, and the almost $7,000 (including donations that were mailed to Carmen) that we have raised will take out a significant chunk of that price.

I can't tell you in words how deeply you have touched the hearts of Carmen, her family, me, and the rest of Carmen's friends! You are the reason that we will be able to give Carmen back her independent life and ability to function self-sufficiently. Thank you so much!
