Second Update

Update posted by Yvette Matalines

Your gifts of prayers and donations have greatly helped Sam in reaching important milestones in her health journey. The support we have received is way beyond what we had anticipated. Your financial donations have made it possible for the family to pay for their hospital bill in Cagayan de Oro City. Your thoughts and prayers have been the family’s comfort and refuge during this difficult time. Thank you very much.

On June 2, 2020, Sam underwent a repeat routine Electroencephalogram (EEG), a test used to track and record brain wave patterns by using electrodes that are attached to the scalp in order to detect problems that might be associated with certain brain disorders. When compared with her previous EEG study, Sam’s current EEG readings showed more promising results- no abnormal brain activity; however, as noted in her lab report, the absence of abnormalities does not rule out the diagnosis of epilepsy or seizures related to Midbrain Cavernoma, and so the doctors have continued to monitor Sam’s condition.

Another encouraging development is the reduction in the number of prescribed medications, from 6 types of meds to just one. By God's grace, Sam’s speech and mobility have also improved, and although mostly confined in her room, she can now clearly articulate her needs and take more steps with little to no pain (headaches). If her stable condition continues and the situation in Manila drastically improves in the next two weeks, Sam will have the Gamma Knife surgery very soon. According to her doctors, the procedure at Cardinal Santos Medical Center in Manila may cost a minimum of P550,000 excluding the doctor’s fee, pre-surgery testing and the post-surgical medications. Efforts are currently being made, with the doctors’ endorsement, to contact the hospital for appointment, about insurance coverage and the net cost of the procedure.

The financial need continues even though some government assistance and donations from private entities have been received for transportation to and from Manila and for accommodation expenses, but the funding goal is slighted adjusted. Until the approximate financial obligation and surgery date are ascertained, the fundraiser continues for the next 10 days. We continue to ask for your prayers.

Once again, on behalf of Sam’s family, thank you for sharing the message of God’s love and mercy through your generous donations and prayers.
