Tumor Re-occurrence

Update posted by Shiela Marie Onez

Last March 5, 2019 my son Miguel Inigo B. Onez, a 7 year old boy complained of stomach pain. After 3 days of consistent abdominal pain and loss of appetite we decided to see a doctor. The doctor told us it was just a simple issue of hyper acidity. A week later, his pain increased and Miguel could not tolerate anything orally. Miguel was taken back to hospital with a suspected diagnosis of Kawasaki disease. Miguel was readmitted on March 27, 2019 in which diagnostic tests showed a large mass in his stomach. We decided to fly to Cebu City and confined him At Chong Hua hospital. More diagnostic tests revealed his left lung has collapsed and there is a mass in the upper part of his left kidney. His left lung was filled with bloody fluid. He was inserted with a tube to drain the fluid(CTT). He has received multiple blood transfusions to help increase his blood count. After the biopsy, the doctor has just revealed that Miguel has been diagnosed with a rare disease called Neuroblastoma Stage 4 Cancer. It was really difficult to accept it but we have a strong God and we trust him that we will get through this. My son needs us to be strong. I could remember crying inside the bathroom so that he could not see me. It was difficult but we are determined to fight and win this battle.

We have already completed the 8 cycles and surgery for the removal of his tumor. We spent 2months in the hospital. That costs us more than we could imagine. Thank God for he provided us with generous families, friends and even newly acquainted people who helped us with our journey. Also to our doctors and nurses who were very kind and caring to us. Our family and friends and even the people who followed Miguel’s story were all overwhelmed with the news, at last the tumor was gone. Things were all good, happy and stable.

Two months after, November 3, 2019 we were attending the Sunday mass. Miguel complained of pain on his knee. I was alarmed and a bit panicked because he was also complaining about it last March. So we checked his abdomen, and we were alarmed that it started to get bigger again. We informed our doctor and she suggested that we should fly to Cebu as soon as possible and have Miguel admitted. And so we did, we were admitted November 8, 2019. Ct scan and laboratories were conducted to re-evaluate. Unfortunately, the tumor is back on the same spot. Now he was having ascites (fluid in the peritoneal cavity) and paracentesis has been done to drain it. Miguel needs to undergo 6 high dose of chemotherapy and surgery again. Each cycle is done for 3-5 days. He already completed the first one. It scares me every now and then since the effect is not that good. RBC, WBC and platelet needs to be checked most of the time to avoid infections and complications. We would like to ask for donations to help us with the medications, medical procedures and hospitalization. Thank you and God Bless.
