Update on Ezra's procedure

Update posted by Cyril Tabangay

Hello everyone,

First of all, we would like to thank all of you for your kind hearts!

Last March 13, Ezra was admitted at Philippine Heart Center for her scheduled Blalock-Taussig shunt procedure which is scheduled the following day.

March 14. Around 4pm, she was brought to operating room and we were told that the procedure is about 3-4 hours. We waited patiently outside and the procedure took 7 hours. Ezra was brought to SICU (surgical intensive cure unit) afterwards.

Dr. Niñalga, member of Dr. Rey Gamponia's team, explained to us what happened. The team found the procedure difficult due to Ezra's heart structure. They first opened Ezra's chest only to find out that the collaterals in the right side are so small and cannot handle the shunt. Ezra's heart has no right atrium nor right valve. So, they immediately closed it and opened another one on the left side as they found one collateral which is big enough to hold the shunt.

Ezra turned 5 years old last March 17 and we just had a simple birthday celebration in the hospital. We are eyeing to give her a Jollibee birthday party once she is stable as it is her request when they flew in Manila. (There is no Jollibee in Coron, yet).

Ezra was supposed to be discharged last March 21. However, around 10AM, she had tet spell. Her oxygen saturation dropped to 16% (normal is 95%). She was brought to treatment room and thank God, she recovered quickly.

Next step would be medical management to help Ezra live a better life. Doctors also required oxygen tank at home for Ezra. Below are her maintenance meds:

  • Sildenafil 8mg 3x/day
  • Propanolol 10mg 2x/day
  • Aspirin 1x/day

We are now hoping and praying that Ezra will be discharged within this week. We are still working on the hospital bill, see below.

Thank you so much for helping Ezra!
