Invasive species removal

Update posted by Alessandra Benton

In our years here it has been an ongoing project to remove all invasive species. After moving to the area we noted that the entire region had become overrun with multiple types of invaders.

First we began with a manual plot clearing of black wattle(Acacia mearnsii), used sustainably as fencing and cooking firewood and the plot for the start of a permaculture forest. We soon saw, that though this method works well for our uses, this was not going to be the best approach for the rest of the region. Galls with wasps that only specifically infect the black wattle species were acquired and quickly released.

This control method has now completely infested this invader, young and old, throughout the entire area. Soon the glorious indigenous forest aspects will regain their space. On to the next invader!
