Update on Baby Lucas

Update posted by Lucas Miguel Cruz

Today is Lucas' 1st month when we were blessed with his existence and is the start of his 3rd week in PGH.
The past two weeks were full of despair and sorrow which eventually turned to joy and hope.
A couple of days during the first week of his stay, we were given the terrible news that his liver has failed wherein one of the its most important function is to produce proteins essential to blood clotting. A small wound would lead to excessive bleeding, what more of an open-heart surgery?
Surgery was impossible at this point and doctors advised that his heart meds can be stopped, giving him a couple of days to live, continue with the meds but eventually building up his immunity to it and will still lead to Lucas’ demise or wait for him to succumb to death due to the liver failure. Whatever the choice was, none was desirable, none would save Lucas.
No one, especially parents should ever have to make a heart-breaking decision whether your child will live or fall into the “eternal slumber.” But Lucas was suffering, his health was quickly deteriorating. We needed to make a decision. Should we continue the heart meds or not? We were asking for signs all over and on the Sunday of his first week, we had a conversation at the PICU with the doctor about stopping the meds, when baby Lucas suddenly looked at us and smiled. This was the sign we were looking for, we knew he was suffering and wanted to rest. Monday early morning was the last dose of his heart meds, we were preparing ourselves for the inevitable.
But lo and behold, instead of giving up, Lucas fought back, harder than ever. His liver’s swelling subsided, its functionality was not 100% back but this is the miracle we were praying for all this time filling our hearts with joy. He is now given vitamins to support the liver’s functionality. Lucas is currently under observation waiting for him to be strong enough for the laboratory that will determine if heart surgery can finally be done.
This is the Lord’s doing, and we thank Him for that.
Thank you everyone for the prayers and support that you’ve been giving us especially Lucas throughout this entire ordeal. We have yet to win this war, but with Him by our side we know Lucas will be saved. Kevin Ray Cruz and Alexandra let's be strong for Lucas!
