Who are we?

Update posted by Emmi van den Boom

We are three documentary filmmakers from Stockholm who want to give a voice to the voiceless. Our documentary about Grace is our first project as filmmakers and as a team. Let us introduce ourselves to you.

Tove Tikkanen Jönn
Who are you?
I'm a journalist who is passionate about photography and filmmaking. I love to read, listen to others point of view and reflect about different topics. I love to learn and try to understand the complex world we are living in. I also take every opportunity to travel.
What have you done before this documentary?
Before I took the documentary course at the Red Cross Community School (which resulted in this film), I worked as a journalist. Before that I have studied photography, philosophy and French.

Why did you want to do this movie?
It felt important. It is an ongoing conflict we hear very little about, so it was a chance to give the people a voice. I have always been interested in human rights and peace development and this was an opportunity to do journalism within the area.

Who are you?
I am a journalist with a passion for telling stories of people whose voices are never heard. Stories that show a different side of a person, country or subject and have an emotional impact. I see the world as an amazing place filled with inspiring people and I take every opportunity to travel and meet them.

What have you done before?
For the last seven years I worked as a journalist. Some of the stories I wrote were about Iran, a country that fascinates me. I’ve written about and photographed young fashionistas in Tehran, female surfers in Baluchistan and amazing home cooks in Shiraz. But I also wrote about people I met in my own backyard in Sweden or the Netherlands. The two countries I call home.

Why did you want to do tell this story?
When we got invited to the biggest refugee camp in Uganda I immediately felt that we would find a story worth telling. Once we met Grace it was clear that it was her voice we needed to spread, her situation that the world needed to hear about. I cannot even put into words how grateful I am that Grace was brave enough to stand up and speak. Not only because it is such an important story to tell, but also because through her voice I found my own. Since that trip I am even more convinced that this is what I want to do: giving the voiceless a voice.

Who are you?
I work as a photographer and director in Stockholm. But my biggest passion has always been traveling and discovering new places.

What have you done before?
Before I started the course at the Red Cross Film School I worked as a photographer and director. I was mainly working with advertisement.

Why did you want to make this film?
I have always wanted to make a documentary. When we met Lia Grace it was clear that we needed to tell her story. I barely knew anything about the situation in Uganda and South Sudan when we first came to the refugee camp. But the more people we met and talked to, the more important it felt to make this film. So that everyone can see and hear what is happening.
