Healing Hands

Update posted by Irene Purcell

Ethan went to the burn clinic in San Antonio on Friday for a follow up. His hands are looking great and his face is virtually healed. Doctors advised that he take in a lot of protein so he is drinking protein supplements and is convinced that is key to the regeneration of all that skin. The dressings still need to be changed twice daily. That's the thing about burns, they are not like other wounds where you slap on a cast or a few stitches then sit back and wait. I am amazed how much he sleeps but it's what the body needs.

As I continue to traipse through life, I try to look for the positive aspects of all areas of life and have become surprisingly successful in finding that proverbial silver lining. While it was an awful, terrifying time in our lives, it has brought us closer as a family. And Jack gets to spend lots of quality time with his Dad. Also,he seems to have taken a huge leap forward in maturity as he realizes life can change on a dime and has become much more appreciative of what he has. I think we all have. Small blessings can be found in the most profound losses. I now have the utmost respect and awe for those caretakers who do this sort of work day and day out. Shopping for food, cooking, cleaning, changing bandages, driving to appointments and running errands can be the most mundane of activities but when done for someone who can't do for themselves, these things are uplifted somehow and become a source of comfort to both doer and receiver.

Anyway, Ethan goes to back to work on Friday in a limited capacity and is looking forward to a change of pace. By the way, again, we both want to thank all of you who have generously donated to his fund and for all the wishes and prayers sent his way.
