November 6, 2016: Toronto Fundraiser for the Yazidi People

Update posted by Cheryl May

Rose Baum, Karen Goldenberg, Carrie Katz, and Irving Weisdorf, President, Mozuud Freedom Foundation, have taken action on the brutal genocide of the Yazidi people by organizing a Project Abraham awareness and fundraising event. They have reached out to their friends to help Project Abraham save Yazidi families in partnership with the Yazidi Human Rights Organization and the Canadian Yazidi community.

Their call to action is this:

During WWII, Jews called out for help. Had the nations of the world heeded their cry, millions of lives would have been saved. Since then we have seen genocide in Cambodia, Rwanda, Sudan – and the world was silent. Now another people, almost extinct after facing genocide after genocide, are crying for help – and few are listening. You have an opportunity to learn about the Yazidi people, what's happening to them, and how you can help. In the memory of the six million who were slaughtered, please don't ignore the cry for help of the Yazidis.

The program for the event includes three dynamic speakers:

  • Sally Armstrong: Filmmaker, award-winning author and women's rights advocate
  • Payam Akhavan: International lawyer and a professor at McGill University in Montreal
  • Rev. Majed El Shafie: A human rights advocate and founder of One Free World International

In her August 2016 MacLean's article, Sally Armstrong tells the horrific stories of Yazidi women. "While the world debates the parameters of genocide, the Yazidi people want to know why they aren’t worth rescuing. They want their people back. They want recognition for the hideous crimes committed against them and they want assurance that this won’t happen again—ever."

Proceeds from the event will be directed toward saving Yazidi families, and donations will be tax-deductible.

The Mozuud Freedom Foundation believes that the Yazidi people, the most ancient national group in Iraq and Syria, deserve our fullest support. They are among the indigenous peoples of Iraq and long predate the Muslim conquest.
