Two Worlds

Update posted by Grainne Evans

Five years ago a tiny baby entered the world , a new life full of promise and potential. It should have been cause for celebration. Five years ago that baby boy should have gone home with his family ? but this baby boy was different. A tiny defect in his genetic code meant his nose and eyes hadn?t developed properly in the womb . His appearance would have shocked his parents and his doctors. With his condition so rare and shrouded in fear and misinformation, this baby became one of China?s one million orphans.

Hidden away in one of the country?s largest children?s institutions he grows into a toddler. His basic needs met by busy, overstretched carers. He reaches out through the bars of his cot searching for them as his eyes struggle to see. Visually impaired and underestimated and he spends much of the time in his cot. He finally learns to walk by his second birthday. No one remembers his first word.

The toddler becomes a little boy. A little boy with a big smile who loves his teacher and likes dressing up. But this is no place for a childhood. A sorry statistic, a ward of the state, his life is wasting. His emotional wounds getting deeper . His potential and his gifts are unseen and unsung as he waits for the family they tell him may one day come. No one has come yet . No one has chosen him .
No child deserves this.

Two and a half years ago a baby girl entered the world, a new life just as perfect and promising as any other. This little girl was different too. Her story could have been the same. Her genetic code had been affected in the same way. Her face looked the same as his ?. But she got to go home. Home to a family who have loved and adored her every day and in every way possible. She was held and rocked and kissed. Every cry was comforted. Every tear wiped. Every smile celebrated .
Every child deserves this.

She will never know his world ? but it?s not too late for him to experience hers .
