Covid-19 HELP for Those in Need

As the world faces a stressful time with the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic and many countries have executed lock down policies, the message for all of us is clear - stay at home to stop the spread of the virus. Lives have been upended. Indonesia, home to 270 million inhabitants, is no exception. While the government is scrambling to find the perfect solution to this unprecedented situation, many have lost their income and many others are left stranded unable return to their hometowns without jobs and without a foreseeable future.

For the 1 million people living in a remote part of Indonesia, a regency called Indragiri Hilir, in the Riau province, “working from home” and “studying from home” is a privilege they simply cannot afford due to economical and infrastructural constraints. Indragiri Hilir lies on the East coast of Sumatra, surrounded by water, sitting on low, marshy lands where boats are the main mode of transport connecting villages. The regency is comprised of 198 heterogeneous villages. Due to its remoteness and geographical landscape, food sourcing has not only been costly, but also limited. Healthcare is a luxury. While there are substandard local state-owned clinics, the provision of health kits, tools, medication, and medical workers has been a challenge even before the pandemic. Most of its inhabitants are either employed with a low income, or sustain themselves from informal and unstable jobs – mainly in the coconut and fishing industries.

During this coronavirus pandemic, many of them are unable to continue to survive. This segment of the working population is part of an economically vulnerale group that is directly faced with the threat of starvation. While the Indonesian economy has been free-falling in the past months, many migrants originally from Indragiri Hilir who had been working and living in big cities have been forced to return back to their hometown in the regency without a livelihood, further straining the resilience of their community. With the loss of their livelihood, they are unable to pay for basic necessities, including food, leaving these people facing starvation.

Furthermore, while there are those who are infected or at a high risk of being infected with COVID-19, the healthcare provision there lies between low to non-existent. Transporting patients to the closest referred hospitals with better equipment and medical workers means hours of costly boat rides. Medical workers, too, are facing threat of infection, further crippling the capacity for healthcare provisions.

You can help ease the burden of these people in need in Indragiri Hilir by making a donation, either big or small. Your kind donation will be managed by Yayasan Bahtera DwipaAbadi to help us reduce the impact of COVID-19 in the regency and in the communities we serve.

Yayasan Bahtera DwipaAbadi is a local non-profit and non-governmental organization that has been focused on the welfare and well-being of the people of Indragiri Hilir since 1991. We need your help to help them continue their essential work. We are launching this campaign to ask for your help.

HOW YOUR DONATION WILL HELP:

- Provision of basic food supplies and necessities for under privilege communities

- Provision of medical equipment and healthcare workers equipment in remote communities

- Help unprivileged children to continue their education during school-closures by government mandate

Your help would really help our communities to survive. Your donations will only be used for covid-19 prevention and response work implemented by our staffs on the ground.Serving the right beneficiaries is a principle for us to achieve maximum impact in the ecosystem of communities.

Follow our website and social media for transparent report to see how your funds help these people and communities.
