I am a nurse working in a retirement village. In 2010 I was introduced to a Bangladeshi man who was visiting where I work. He was running a medical team and schools in the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka. He invited me over to help out alongside international volunteer doctors in his project. My first 2 trips ( 1 month each time ) I helped out in the slums of Dhaka. I had never seen such suffering and heartbreak as I did here. After my second trip I found out that this man was not the saint I thought he was. He was pocketing a lot of the donations himself. I was shattered to find this out, especially that he grew up in the slums himself and I thought he should have been a better person. The driver of the medical team invited me to visit his family in a very remote village in southern Bangladesh (8 hours by boat) The poverty I saw here broke my heart so I decided to do my own thing. I am not an organisation. My family and friends and work colleges give me money when I go to help out, a lot of the elderly ladies at my work knit jumpers and beanies for the children. 5 times I have been to this village (7 times all up I have been in Bangladesh) I pay my own airfare and expenses there. In the last 2 years my friends and I have done so much work. We so far have put down 5 wells. Each well goes down 1000 feet and have 3 filters on them. The only water these people had was a well approx 2kms away and not very good quality water as it only went down 400 feet and was full of iron, or they drank the putrid river water (some dying because of this)  We have planted a huge community garden, fixed up one of the schools that was crumbling around the kids heads, donated stationary, books, new blackboards, sporting equiptment, the list goes on. My last trip in February 2014 we raised enough money to help 75 children go to school. we supplied them with uniforms, books, backpacks and calculators for the high school children. Some of these children were 11 and 12 and starting grade 1. 100% of the money given to me goes into this village. I bring back receipts of everything I buy or do and photos for everyone so they can see where their money has gone. I found a lot of people want to help others but are becoming upset that so much money is going into administration fees from charities. Someone told me about this site so I thought why not give it a go. I and the people of this village would be grateful for any help. A little money goes a long way in this country. Believe me I do not go there because I love the country, I go because these are the most beautiful people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, and even though they have nothing they would give you the shirt off their back. Thank you
