Baby Gheo needs some help!

Baby Gheo needs some help! He was born on 26th December 2016 and he is now 6 month old. He was transferred to the neonatal unit at Da Nang Hospital for Women & Children when he was three days old.

After many weeks of being very ill and lots of tests he was diagnosed with a rare Congenital Metabolic disease. This means his body cannot breakdown amino acids that are the building blocks of proteins that are found in breast milk, ordinary infant formula and many foods we eat.

To survive and grow he needs a special formula 0A1 – a medical food powder for babies with this condition.

His parents are from a poor ethnic minority community in Quang Nagi province. Baby Gheo is their third child their second child died without a diagnosis, almost certainly from the same disease. The family income is 4 million VND a month one tin of special formula costs 1,1 million VND.

To meet the nutritional needs of baby Geo until he can be weaned fully to solid food at 12 months of age the family needs 30 tins of special formula, the cost is 33 million VND - $1,500 (USD).

Our neonatal staff have done their very best to save his life but he needs more support if he is to grow and thrive. If we raise more than the $1,500 the additional funding will support Newbonrns Vietnam's work to reduce preventable newborn deaths.
