Arfah, our wonderful field biologist and dear friend, has been sick a couple of times in the last four months with nausea (including vomiting), lack of appetite and headaches . Sometimes these headaches were quite severe, meaning she stayed at home but between this, she was continuing to work in the office, and carry out work in the centre.

Arfah went to see several doctors during her illness, and was diagnosed with typhoid (March), dengue (April) and nutrition deficiencies (June). At the end of June, staff saw she was slowly growing weaker and in July, Arfah started having issues with her coordination and balance. She was then brought to a neurologist, and only a week later Arfah had to be admitted to the hospital. CT-scans were able to confirm a mass in Arfah’s brain. Her family came over from Sumatra to be with her, and the decision was then made to move her to Medan for further treatment. Here an MRI revealed a 5cm diameter tumor and accumulated fluids in the brain.

Arfah is currently in stable condition but the doctors need to place a shunt to drain fluids which are putting pressure on her brain. This will be followed by radiation to shrink the brain tumor as soon as possible. Arfah's family are with her and are doing everything they can to support her. However the medical costs are high so we are asking you to help with this.
