Apex 4 Expedition

APEX (Altitude Physiology Expeditions) is a globally renowned academic collaboration of medical researchers and physicians in Edinburgh. Founded in 2000 the organisation has previously conducted three research expeditions to Chacaltaya. The current expedition is led by a motivated group of senior medical students at the University of Edinburgh who will gain invaluable clinical and research experience, and will provide unique professional and cultural opportunities for a group of thirty five younger students. We aim to perform quality experiments to further understanding of the severe and often unappreciated risks of high-altitude, and importantly it is our goal to translate this knowledge to the practice of critical care medicine at sea-level, here in the UK. This summer, the APEX group are organising another expedition to high altitude, to test the effects on a group of volunteers. The volunteers have to pay all their own costs including flights, equipment and contributing to the cost of accommodation. The total cost will come in at around £1300.
