Campaign Story
Hi, my name is Derek and I set up this crowdfunding campaign for my mom, Amphy Rota, who is suffering from palatal cancer. Before I elaborate about our current need, let me give you some background.
FIRST DIAGNOSIS
My mom was first diagnosed with adeno carcinoma in 2008, after a biopsy showed that a small tumor in her throat is malignant. Unwilling to undergo operation and chemotherapy due to lack of finances, my mom tried some alternative medicine supplied by a nutritional oncologist who was referred to her. After taking the medications for more than a year, she noticed that the tumor in her throat disappeared. After that, we all thought she was cancer free for the next few years.
TUMOR REEMERGES
Fast forward to 2014, my mom began to notice that it's becoming more difficult for her to let her tongue out and swallow big chunks of food. She returned to the oncologist and after a series of CT scans, it was found out that the tumor reappeared - this time below my mom's tongue. Again, she took some alternative medication with the help of some relatives and friends. We just could not afford the recommended treatment during that time, which is either chemotherapy or operation. However, the following year we were hit with bad news...
An ultrasound in my mom's abdomen area revealed that she had multiple tumors in her liver, which are probably metastasis or the spreading of the cancer cells in her body. It also explained the shooting abdominal pain she had been experiencing over the past few months. We tried to fund her alternative medication once more, mainly because an operation at that time may not yield the desired results, and it was risky.
Her condition only got worse due to failure to take medication continuously. Since 2015, my mom has taken pain relievers for her stomach pain. Each day she takes about 4-5 capsules just to alleviate the pain she is experiencing.
Since the start of the year (2017), my mom has been unable to chew hard food, only soft ones, and especially soup. In the past few months, the tumor underneath her tongue grew until she is no longer capable of eating any solid food easily. As a result, she became malnourished and grew very thin.
Early in October, we noticed that her skin and eyes have turned yellow. We decided to take her to the hospital even though we don't have any means to pay for the bills. She underwent a whole body CT scan which showed that aside from her throat and liver, the cancer has affected her lungs, spleen, and bones as well. Doctors said all they could do was supportive care. In short, they implied that they could not do anything to cure my mom's cancer.
She was endorsed to the hospital's pain management department where she was given opioid patches as pain relievers. While the patches numb the pain she experiences, they are also very expensive.
PAIN RELIEVERS
Each patch has 50mgl and costs about P1850. Because my mom's medication requires 200mgl for the pain to subside, we need 4 pieces of the patch - so that's P1850 x 4. The effect of the four patches only lasts for three days or 72 hours. Before that time comes, we should prepare another set of four patches to replace the old ones.
Currently, we are planning to have my mom admitted in a cancer care health center in the Philippines. The treatment would include the use of herbs and other alternative medicine. We believe there is still hope for her through this kind of treatment. Estimated cost for the medication, food and room is P120,000 for 20 days. We need the initial 50 percent as downpayment upon admission, and then the remaining 50 percent should be paid before the 20 days end. We are hoping you can help our cause -- Amphy's fight through faith.
Even though everything seems hopeless, we are praying that God can still work another miracle in her life. He had already prolonged her life even after detection more than 9 years ago. We believe God can still heal her completely.
