“Remember, my son, that in your lifetime you were given all the good things, while Lazarus got all the bad things. But now he is enjoying himself here, while you are in pain. (Luke 16:25)- The Parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man.

In this parable, the rich man does nothing while alive to help Lazarus, a poor beggar, and when he dies the rich man goes to Hell whilst Lazarus goes to Heaven. While in Hell the rich man asks Abraham for some relief and he is declined, in the same way that he did nothing to help Lazarus. He also asks Abraham if he can go and warn his brothers, but once again is declined, as his brothers have the prophets to listen to.

This parable sends the message that worldly and earthly possessions are of no benefit in the afterlife. Those who have suffered on Earth will receive their reward in Heaven.

But why am I saying this parable for my fund raising campaign? The main reason is that the “Listang Lazaro” one of the apostolates of Sto. Nino Cathedral Church in Calapan City is rooted in this parable. The mission of Listang Lazaro is to extend help and give compassion to the least, the last and the lost or the poorest in the certain pamayanan or barangay.

This mission started way back 2013 headed by Rev. Fr. Edgar F. Fabic. This mission was inspired by the Parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man. Its purpose is not just to identify who are the poorest of the poor but to make them feel that just like the friend of Jesus, Lazarus, they can also be friends of Jesus not just because they are poor but because they also deserve to have a deep relationship with Him. The main purpose of this mission is to help them to be closer to Jesus Christ. To make them feel the presence of the Lord through the good deeds that they will receive from this program. This apostolate is under the Lingap Center coordinated by Mr. Merlito Bonquin and is also under Justice and Peace Committee.

The original number of beneficiaries of this apostolate are 45 people, 3 poorest of the poor from each pamayanan under the Sto. Nino Cathedral Church but in the present time it has 54 beneficiaries due to the increasing number of people who are really in need. The beneficiaries were personally assessed and identified by the pamayanan coordinators together with Mr. Bonquin to make sure that they are really the best choices for this apostolate. Those who are included in Listang Lazaro receive 3 kilograms of rice every month. The distribution of rice is facilitated by each pamayanan coordinators. Sometimes, additional goods are given with the help of the sponsors from the community. The fund for this apostolate is from the Lingap Center donations and from some of the kind-hearted sponsors within the different pamayanan.

Having been inspired and moved by this story, I would want to be a part of this heavenly mission, helping the last, the least and the lost to be closer to Jesus by sharing with them God's blessings and love. I want to make them feel God's warm embrace (AKAP/ YAKAP) despite the hardships in life. Now, this is our chance to extend our help and warm embrace (AKAP) for the modern Lazarus of our times. Anchored in the celebration of 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines with its theme: Gifted to Give, I am humbly asking for your sincere help or donation in this mission of giving hope and love to the least, the last and the lost of the community. Making them feel the presence of Jesus Christ and be His friends through the blessings that they will receive from this apostolate. The collected funds will be turned over to the Lingap Center by December. This will be used in giving the Lista Lazaro beneficiaries a joyful Christmas centered in Christ mission and love for the poor.
