Hi, my name is Darryl John Pasamba, a third-year medical student at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center.
I have been struggling with my finances in medical school since I was in first year, back in 2016. I am a recipient of an academic and financial scholarship, a reason why I can still proceed with my medical education. My mother is a vendor and her meager income is not sufficient to support a family of four.
Our finances are enough just to get us by, I never thought that anything dreadful would happen until last January 2019, when I was rushed to the ER due to severe abdominal pain and vomiting. I was diagnosed with ACUTE IDIOPATHIC PANCREATITIS. I was hospitalized for nine days. My friends, classmates, and colleagues at the hospital helped to raise funds to pay the medical bills.
Yet on February 2019, I had my 2nd admission this time due to a PSEUDOCYST FORMATION, a complication of Acute Pancreatitis. I had to undergo a costly procedure to aspirate the cyst. Again my friends and classmates helped to pay for my medical bills.
I would constantly be in pain. Pancreatitis is a silent monster.
Today, April 12, I am yet again on a hospital bed. This time my third admission just this year, 2019. I had a pseudocyst formation for the 2nd time which is urgently needed to be aspirated. I would be needing a handful of scans such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) Scans which my family will not be able to afford considering the number of admissions I’ve had. Once I get discharged, the plan is to undergo a definitive treatment which is an endoscopic pancreatic necrosectomy which is another burden for my family and finances.Sincerely,
Darryl John Pasamba
