A Child’s Story from the Life Home Project

At the Life Home Project, we provide housing, food, medical care, spiritual support, and education for our 11 children who are either HIV positive or come from homes where their parents are HIV positive.

Given that we receive limited financial support from the Thai Government, we are forced to reach out to our local community to seek financial help, so we can continue the great work that is currently being done.

Many of our children come from the poorer or underprivileged communities of Southern Thailand, where either one or both of their parents have died from HIV or have found themselves in prison, therefore, unable to care for their child, whether providing a safe home with enough food or sending them to school. Some of these families have been known to force their children to beg on the street corner out of desperation.

About Nong Prae

One of these children, Nong Prae, who tested HIV positive, is half Thai and Indonesian. She has been at the project since she was 6 years old. Prae has recently turned 17. Initially, she lived with her mother and younger brother after her father returned to Indonesia. Being poor, her mother would cook rice, mix salt into it for her to eat. Prae’s mother could not afford to send her to school, therefore, Prae did not have access to basic education and health care.

At that time, her mother did not know Prae was HIV positive. Eventually, Prae started to show signs of this illness. At this point, the hospital reached out to the Life Home Project to help Prae.

Initially, Prae was very shy and quiet and unsure as to why she was placed here. Many nights, she cried herself to sleep, missing her parents. Through a tremendous amount of work, care, and love provided by the foundation, she started to bloom as a beautiful Rose. Though she has come a long way, there is still a tremendous amount of work ahead for her as she reaches for the stars.

She is currently 17 years old and has started college in Phuket Town. Her dream is to study hard and receive a degree in Computer Science and enter the IT industry. Besides reaching for this dream, she is also planning to provide financial support to her mom and younger brother once she has graduated and received a well-paying job.

Why help Nong Prae

Though she has started her college career, she still has 4 more years before she will complete her education. To complete this Computer Science Program, she needs to raise close to 2,300 USD or about 71,300 baht per year, so she can successfully achieve her dream.

Just imagine finding out that your parents are no longer a part of your life, you are HIV positive, you have spent over 12 years in a project away from your family and the view of your future is limited by how society judges you. It seems hopeless but with the help from a village, you can provide Prae hope for a better career and future.

Your donations will help Nong Prae see that she is a valid part of our community and society and that you actually care.
