Campaign Story
Disability is not inability.
In September 2017 my boyfriend and I visited Nepal to volunteer for an orphanage named 'Possible Nepal'. After we arrived only to find out that we were arranged to teach in a Disabled Home and to live with them. It wasn't the first time we interacted or worked with the disabled, but living with them was such a mind-boggling experience for us (in a good way of course).
We were quite worried at first as we'd be now be teaching adults rather than kids (which we assumed to be an easier task), and dealing with the fine lines between being "helpful" and "discriminating" everyday. However our fears were proved unfounded as the everyone in the Home was really nice and lovely, passionate to learn and independent.
We spoke to the founder (Chandra) and a few of the residents to find out that their income is mainly from the sales of handicrafts they make each day and small donation from monasteries and local temples (most of the donations are gifts in kind i.e. blanket and bed sheets).
We aren't planning to raise funds actively, just a small sum to ease their winter days. And frankly, it doesn't take much to make their Christmas amazing.
Just an idea of how much things cost in Nepal:
A silicone light-down jacket NPR1500 > USD14
A wool blanket NPR450 > USD4
Thermal clothes NPR450 > USD4
Gloves NPR350 > USD3
I think you can estimate the rest. It costs lesser than a meal...
We also made a friend from England, Neil (who is our volunteer cum photographer) and he's raising funds for the orphanage as well. It's at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/phutung. These beautiful photos are also courtesy of him, you can visit his blog at www.shvtter.com/blog.
Any dollar raised will go to the Disabled Home, don't worry :)
