Treatment unit to supply a remote Jordanian village

A successful project has ended, Jordan's first brackish water treatment unit operating on renewable energy has started supplying households in the eastern desert region with water by Mar 2013 :-).

Construction of a new treatment unit started early last month to supply water to households in Wadi Mousa village in Ma'an's District, 300km (200 miles) to the south of the capital, Amman - Jordan. The brackish water treatment unit will operate on solar and wind energy. It will provide fresh water to the 25 households in this remote village.

The unit, which will be installed on a brackish water well, will have the capacity to treat up to 60 cubic metres of water per day and supply the village's households with two cubic metres per house per day, The brine water that will come from the desalination process will be used for landscaping purposes, such as planting heat-tolerant plants.

The treatment unit will improve Wadi Mousa village's socio-economic conditions because now its residents have to travel some 30 kilometres (20 miles) to buy water from tankers.

The treatment system costs between JD20,000 ($30,000) and JD25,000 ($35,000).
