Aaliyah’s Journey

Aaliyah was born with a condition known as Microtia/Atretia. Basically, she has a 'lucky' ear and will need reconstructive surgery to allow her lead a 'normal' life. The surgery will allow her to hear accurately, and go on to have a full functioning right ear. Unfortunately this surgery is currently only available at the California Ear Institute, Palo Alto, America. It also comes with a hefty price tag (currently $65000 + expenses). The operation is quite lengthy (10 + hours) and has a recovery period of 4-6 weeks.This page has been set up to raise awareness as well as much needed funds. Aaliyah is now 4 years old, the surgeons ideal time to perform the operation is between the ages of 3 and 5. This allows enough time for the ear to heal and for optimal hearing to be achieved. Aaliyah's journey does not start when she has the operation, it started the day she was born. She regularly attends ENT, Paediatric and Audiology appointments. She also has Auditory-Verbal therapy lessons and assessment to track her development and ensure that she is not behind in speech and language. She also wears and bone conductor hearing aid, held on by a head band. This allows the afftected ear to be stimulated and provide limited hearing to that ear.
