Deciding to create a personal fundraiser can be an immensely rewarding, but challenging experience. But what can you do to make it really stand out from the crowd? How do you make people want to be a part of it and donate?

Here are five clever ways to get your personal fundraiser noticed

1.         Have an Attractive Fundraiser Page

This may sound obvious, but taking the extra time to really think about how you want to present your fundraiser, what rewards, if any, you would like to offer, what photos you are going to add and how clearly you express your fundraising need can really impact on a donors willingness to donate.

Also, keep on top of news updates, change your pictures regularly and keep reminding everyone you know your fundraiser is still ‘open for business’.

2.         Create the Hype

People like to feel like they are one of the crowd, part of something great. If you understand this natural trait, you will understand that statistically, people are more likely to donate to a fundraiser that is already established. So, how do you get to that all-important stage?

A few days before you ‘officially launch’ your fundraiser, approach close family and friends and ask them to make donations to your fundraiser. They don’t have to be large amounts, but ask them to split the donation, making half of the donation as themselves and half anonymously. You can join in too.

This impression of lots of donations, will encourage others to follow suit once the fundraiser is ‘official’.

3.         Be Brave and Prepared to Think Differently

Many fundraisers don’t reach their target simply because, once they’ve asked family and friends to donate and done the ‘whole social media thing’ they think they have exhausted their options.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. There has been great success for a number of fundraisers on our site who have approached community organisers, radio stations, newspapers and magazines with their stories, and, it is not as scary or as difficult as you may think.

If that isn’t something you wish to consider, what about groups or businesses that have a connection to your cause? One particular fundraiser approached a business for a donation and walked away with the entire target amount!

4.         Share Your link

Your link (or URL) is the single most important feature of your fundraiser.

You need to get this in as many places as you can. Family, friends and colleagues together with social media are the most common ways to do this. But what about adding the link with a very concise message to your email signature? Or posting an ad in any of the free classified ads, or putting a flyer up in a few of you local shops or the back window of the car? These methods really can attract donations.

5.         Be Persistent – Without Being Overbearing

If your fundraiser momentum is starting to wane, give it a bit of a makeover. Change the photo, add your updates, and then contact everyone again telling them that you would like to give them an update on progress. Tell them there are some great updates, and that you have now included some fantastic rewards.

Don’t panic, these rewards, need not cost a thing. We have seen ‘sneak peaks’ of a wedding dress, a photo of someone crossing the finishing line at a marathon, a handwritten note, old jewellery, or even eternal thanks being offered as rewards, with great results.

This new injection to the fundraiser can be just the boost new donors can be motivated by, and those who have already donated are often willing to make a second donation.
