Welcome kind stranger, my name is Zsófia Vincze and first I want to say thank you for your time. Now let's jump right into the story of Zserbó, the shetland pony.

In december, 2018 my biggest dream come true. My family rescued a sad, neglected pony from a place where they really loved her, but unfortunately didn't have the time and knowledge to take care of her properly. She was standing in her own muck and probably never seen grass before. So we ended up buying her, basically she became my Christmas gift that year. :) My ultimate dream was to own a horse no matter the size or the breed. I am a 24 year old, 5"6 girl, so it was obvious that I will never sat on her back. But that didn't matter to me at all. She became my best friend, my therapeutic horse. :) Unfortunately I have some really bad mental illnesses and tend to be really suicidal, so there was many times when she saved my life for sure. I can't find the words to tell you how much she means to me, but if you ever had an animal whom you built a special bond with, then you probably know what I'm talking about.

So what is going on exactly and why I need your help

In Christmas, 2020 I noticed a slight head tilt in Zserbó. After the holidays I called the vet, who gave her antibiotics, but he couldn't really tell me what was going on. I decided to call another vet (at this point Zserbó's symptoms worsened, she had really bad ataxia and didn't eat or drink at all). This vet told me that my horse's neurological symptoms are so bad that there is no chance she would survive long term and she should be euthanized. I was devastated but completely refused to give up on her. She is such a fighter and I didn't saw any sign of her giving up yet.
So I made a decision and called a very promising team of vets who lived approximately 86 miles away from us. Well, let me tell you it was the best decision I could've made. They are amazing doctors and I finally felt that my pony is in good hands. They gave me the diagnosis:

Temporohyoid Osteoarthropathy (THO)

It is basically a progressive disease of the middle ear, the temporohyoid joint, the stylohyoid bone, and the base of the skull. And on top of that she developed Hyperlipidemia which is almost killed her. The treatment was obviously sooo expensive, but the worst part was to stay up all night, making sure we feed her constantly so her frame doesn’t give up. It was truly heartbreaking to see her suffer. The vets told me she only has 25% chance to survive. But she truly is a miracle and made it through the next day, and the next, and the next…
She began the recovery process and I was so proud of her! She is my hero.

Unfortunately in the meantime she developed corneal ulcer, so the vets had to came back again. And as today, I have to call them back once more because she started acting strange, became lame and depressed.

Final notes

The THO itself is a rare disease and rehabilitation can be as long as 2 years. We will need a lot of time and patience to help Zserbó fight this disease.

I paid 1740 € already and she is currently so far from being healthy, so I’m afraid we are not done with the exams, blood works, meds, and supplements. I honestly have no clue how much we have to spent in the future, but I am truly grateful for every little help. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for helping us. Thank you for saving my dear Zserbó.
