The Zongo project was founded in March 2015 by a group of volunteers. I am one of these volunteers who visited the community and saw for myself the appauling conditions that these people live in. An elderly lady with a sheet on the floor for a bed and a 'toilet' which consisted of a little trench which drained out into the gap between her house and the next. The rest of the community live with similar problems. They do not use water filters and drink dirty ground water. For these reasons, heath is not good, and the many people who do get ill just aren't educated enough or well-off enough to get the medical assistance they reqiuire. The project aims to provide the Zongo community, in the Kwahu region of Ghana with better buildings, sanitation and education. This will then help to bring the community out of poverty and give them hope for a better future.  There will be more volunteers attempting to help Zongo when they head to Ghana through the company Original Volunteers, but what they really need is support from those of us back in the UK. When I was in Ghana this year I was shocked at how just £5 ot £10 could go such a long way. To me it was nothing, just money I would spend on lunch or a few drinks with friends, but in Ghana it could buy a few bags of cement and a few dozen cement blocks- the begninnings of providing a better toilet for the elderly lady I saw, to ensure her good health and comfort, and to gradually provide more and more support to every household in Zongo. This prospect is exciting, that we at home could make such a difference to the lives of the people of the Zongo community. While I was working in Zongo we began improving one of the particularly run-down classrooms in the school, take a look at the facebook page to see how much progress we made.  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Zongo-project-Ghana/447825792047255?sk=timeline   The next aims in Zongo are: 1)Improve sanitation- stop faeces and stagnant water leaking through the streets, improve the most sun-standard houses. 2) Build a community centre- enable volunteers to use this place to educate the people of Zongo, teach them english, teach them how to use water filters, and most importantly allow the interactions between the volunteers and Zongo comminty to continue.  Below is a list of prices of some the building materials we used: Cement= £6/bag Truck of sand =£116 for adouble truck Truck of stones= £50 Galvanised poles= £8 Cement blocks= 40p Nails= £2 Mason/Carpenter=£4-5/day Food and water for workers= £5 These materials are what we aim to raise money to buy, as well as food for the Zongo community, which volunteers take along with them regulalry to help the poorest of the community. Bags of rice and biscuits and juice for the kids are also important purchases that the volunteers take on outreach visits to Zongo.   Thank you for reading about Zongo, any donations will make a difference, not matter how small. With the money we raise the volunteers will be able to help lift Zongo out of poverty and you will have been a part of that. Thank you :)
