Dear supporters of Zimbabwean sculptors

Through discussions with the Zimbabwe Sculptors Association it has become apparent that there is no help at present for the 100's of sculptors we work with. Many are already hungry and we need to act swiftly to help them and their families cope. Many sculptors as we know live from day to day on the sales of their sculptures.

If any of our sculptors will be effected by this pandemic, it will be a travesty for us all. Being based in Harare, we can help coordinate whilst in self-isolation.

Whilst we are ALL feeling the impact of cancelled shows, closed galleries and events, we also need to think about the artists whose entire livelihood has disappeared overnight, with no safety net and little, to no state aid.

Right now the most dire need is for food and thereafter rent. A basic food package is currently costing USD12 for a family per month. The average room rental is approx USD25 for two bedrooms in a home.

It makes more sense to coordinate a collective effort to ensure all families are covered than to avoid duplication of individuals efforts.

We have communicated with the Chairman of each Centre of each area to identify those artists who are struggling and to send through their ECOCASH details.

We have set up an account with ECOCASH whereby hundreds of artists can receive funds in one click. This is the SAFEST and easiest way to help everyone all over the country.

The critera; to make sure it gets to those artists who need it most and who have been sculpting for more than 5 years.

We are happy to send you a complete breakdown of donations and expenditure for transparency.

From discussing with all area leaders here are the figures:

Chitungwiza Arts Centre 235 sculptors
Tafara and Mabvuku Arts Centre and neighbouring centres 45 sculptors
Hatfield Tsindi Arts Centre 45 sculptors
Independent 100 sculptors
Tengenenge 100 & Guruve 25
Nyanga 5

Total sculptors: 555

Please feel free to call, WhatsApp or email any us to discuss further. Let's ALL work together, for a common goal.

Thank you to help those in need.
