Campaign Story
I am thinking of a model that tries to solve Youth unemployment.
It's called Youth Inclusive Entrepreneurial Program.
It's a fund.
Background
According to the 2015/2016 BASIC LABOUR FORCE REPORT, released in March 2018, it's estimated that 1.22 million Kenyans aged 15-34 are unemployed. This makes 11.4% of 10.7 million Kenyans aged 15-34 who are part of the Labour Force. But this is just the standard unemployment i.e it represents people who are actively looking for jobs. The same study shows that 85% of unemployed Kenyans are below 35 years.
United Nations Development Programme placed Kenya's Youth unemployment rate at 26.2% in 2017 for the ages between 15-24.
How Does it Work?
In Kenya, 98% of the Youth of 20-35 years own phones and/or Mpesa accounts. Here they transact in a number of ways. More often they have some little remaining as Mpesa or cash balances. These small balances, when they lack what to do are either changed into airtime and/or sent to betting companiess. What if we placed interest on these small balances?
But how?
I have come up with clusters, savings target for the different saving models.
Cluster 1.
KES 16,500. Savings of upto KES 16,500 from the 12th month of your first deposit attracts a monthly payment of 4500 from the 15th month of your first deposit, for 14 months.
Any balances (over payments get refunded).
Cluster 2
KES 23,800. Savings of upto KES 23,800 from the 12th month of your first deposit attracts a monthly payment of 6500 from the 15th month of your first deposit for 22 months.
Any balances to be refunded.
Cluster 3
KES 37,000. Savings of upto KES 37,000 from the 12th month of your first deposit attracts monthly payments of 10,000 from the 15th month of your first deposit 26 months.
Any balances will be refunded.
Cluster 4
KES 55,000. Savings of upto KES 55,000 from the 12th month of your first deposit attracts a monthly payment of upto KES 15,000 from the 16th month of your first deposit for 33 months.
Any balances will be refunded.
These clusters, simply means saving as little as KES 45, KES 65, KES 100 AND KES 150 daily, respectively. For 12 months.
Accounts that do not meet the threshold savings target ( KES 16,500) do not qualify for any monthly payments but their balances at the end of 12th month from first deposit attract interest of 30%.
Accounts that plough back upto 35% of their total monthly payments qualify for monthly payments above the cluster they qualified for previously, for 48 months.
Individuals and groups have total control over their savings, to withdraw and/or transfer.
