I am due to attend a youth cultural exchange programme to Germany in 2019 hosted by Youth for Understanding (YFU).

The programme aims to create a more integrated world through the youth. The student lives in a foreign country with a foreign family. While doing this they get to learn more about their host country in terms of language, culture, religion, food, schooling system, music and various other aspects. Through this, the organisation (YFU) hopes to broaden the perspective of the student during their exchange year in order to bring about tolerance and understanding in the student. However, during their exchange year; the student is equipped with way more than this. The programme gives the student a sense of self-discovery and independence as they go to a place where they don't know anyone and most likely; the language of the certain region, they therefore have to adapt.

Going on exchange would be truly a wonderful opportunity for me to not only discover a new country and culture and to learn a new language, but also to broaden my horizon, to meet other exchange students from all over the world, and to find a new family and home “away from home”. Please assist us in giving me the opportunity of a lifetime to spending a year in Germany, living with a host family and attending school. This experience will provide me with intercultural skills and add to my level of maturity this benefitting my leadership within South Africa.

Thank you.
