The heart is a mysterious thing. It can decide to stop anytime and life ceases to be.

Yolanda Guevarra - Dolor -- Yolie to most, and Mommy to myself and my siblings -- is in for the fight of her life.

At 68 years old, she has done a great deal with her life. She's written wonderful books for children and has helped so many with her generous spirit. Today, we are knocking on your kind hearts for help. With the global pandemic ravaging the world and economies failing left and right, we understand that giving from your own pockets is difficult. But we are in dire need of financial help.

Her Medical Journey

For the last 15 years, my mother has survived the difficulties of Congestive Heart Failure coupled with Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The last 12 months have been the most challenging time for us seeing her suffer as she has.

In Sept 2019, she was hospitalised in the ICU for 1 month due to pneumonia. This was brought on by her condition and the declining ejection factor of her heart. Water stays in her lungs and has to be drained. After this round of hospitalisation, she required an oxygen tank at home.

In March 2020, she had to be taken to the hospital again. She had her first tracheostomy. Because of the on-going Covid-19 issues, she had to have surgery alone. When she was sent home, she required a Bpap machine to sustain her breathing.

On July 6, she was taken to the ICU because she was having difficulties breathing. She had a cardiac arrest, went into a coma and was put on a respirator. My siblings were told that she might not wake up anymore due to the lack of oxygen in her brain and her heart failing. It was a miracle that she lasted another two weeks and woke up from her coma. They had to do a second tracheostomy replacing her existing trache. Her hemoglobin count crashed right after surgery, requiring an emergency blood transfusion.

The Fight Continues

My mom is strong and continues to fight but her doctors are saying she will eventually need a coronary bypass. We suspect that she wants to see my nephew from my youngest brother. He is due to be born in a month.

We admire her fighting spirit and her will to live. However, we really need a bit of financial help. So far, we've spent PHP3.5 million on the hospital bills (roughly US$71,000). We have exhausted all our finances and are deep in debt. We know that we will need more money in the future for her heart surgery and her on-going medical expenses -- including a full-time caregiver and her daily medication for her heart, her diabetes and her lung condition.

I am an Overseas Filipino Worker based in New Zealand. The pandemic has been difficult. I am unable to go home to care for her or even see her. I've had to take a pay cut as well. My siblings have issues with their work, with reduced hours and even job loss.

So, we are reaching out to you. Any amount you can contribute would be highly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your generosity. We ask that you also share this page to anyone who can help.

Messages of Hope

Update posted by JadeCeres Munoz at 09:03 am

We've been receiving messages from friends and family around the world. While the ICU nurses are extremely busy, they've taken the time to read one or two messages to my mom each day. She's asleep most of the day but gets to hear how much people love her when she's. . . . .

Watching a Mother Face Death

Update posted by JadeCeres Munoz at 11:48 am

Today, after days of worrying, zero sleep and standing by our phones all night, we finally heard from the ICU staff. "Patient Dolor is showing signs of a bit of improvement, vitals slowly normalizing" and for a brief moment, we all let out a sigh of relief, the surgery was. . . . .
