My name is Eliza and I am a counselor in a New York City public high school. I am seeking to raise funds for my tuition costs to complete a 200 hour yoga certification via the Breathe For Change Program. This opportunity would not only transform my life, but in turn allow me to better serve my students and community, teaching them the healing gift of mind and body wellness.
I have been serving the NYCDOE system and it's students for the past 7 years. Similarly to the Breathe For Change program's founder, Ilana Nankin, I have witnessed an education system where students, parents, and staff operate at constant levels of anxiety, often with few outlets to mindfully expel that toxic energy. These stressors impact the way we operate and the way we take the world in. What if I could assist my school community and personal community learn to be their best selves, despite what the world throws at them? What if I could be an agent of change?
The program's tuition is $2650, I have received a scholarship for $500 of that amount. I am requesting the full tuition amount to repurpose that $500 into purchasing supplies for my students to practice with, such as loaner yoga mats, blocks, straps, blankets, and Doterra pure essential oils.
With this certification I intend to transform:
- Myself - any journey of change begins with self. I have been in this process for a year or so now, I am seeking to take my biggest dive into that self transformation yet.
- My school community - I intend to bring mindfulness and yoga classes and curriculum into my school in the 2018-2019 school year and beyond. I intend to expand my current counseling practice with a knowledgeable base of yoga and mindfulness.
- My personal community - I intend to bring the benefits of (and actual practice of) yoga/wellness into my personal relationships with friends and family.
- Communities at large - Most importantly I intend to make sure that the gift of mental and body wellness is not a luxury to some, but a right to all. Often these practices are shamed or financially shunned from non-wealthy communities or out of sight/out of reach for others. I eventually hope to open a facility or practice to provide these services to anyone who wishes to explore them in a way that is financially feasible to their need, not a base studio rate.
