YIET (Youth Initiative for Economic Transformation) is part of Ye! Community, a global platform powered by the International Trade Centre (ITC), that supports young entrepreneurs. The ITC is the joint agency of the World Trade Organization and the United Nations.
YIET, youth nitiative is a community-based organization operating in Kiryandongo District in Midwestern Uganda, registered with Kiryandongo District Local Government with registration number CD/3427.
YIET's Mission; "To transform the livelihoods of the youth and instill in them an early stage financial, Foundational and Leadership Skills and knowledge for economic development"
Uganda's main economic activity is agriculture, which is prevalent in rural communities and carried out on subsistence basis with limited scale. For its youth, the fundamentals of the economy means that the opportunity for education, empowerment, or access to funds to start up income generating activities is extremely limited leading to slow development and social issues.
YIET runs three (3) major programs to fill this void.
1. FINANCIAL LITERACY, promotes financial literacy education and practices through collaboration with the existing Village Savings and Loaning Association Activities (VSLA) organization. Loans are granted to people to further their business activities, mimicking an informal financial institution setup.
2. FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS, Is aimed at imparting education on practical life skills and awareness on Sexual Reproductive Health, especially for young girls through trainings on Making Reusable Menstrual Pads so that they may continue their basic right to education and independence.
In a bid to end menstrual poverty and halt the Practice of #SexforPads, we have embarked on a campaign of putting Reusable menstrual Pads in every young girl's hand in Africa.
Did you know that in Africa there is SEX FOR PADS?? Well, this is a Sad Reality. Kindly listen to this conversation between a victim of Menstrual Poverty testifying this fact.
You wont believe this sad reality; Listen here; https://youtu.be/s-S5HyNASrA
3. LEADERSHIP SKILL, Looks to empower, engage, mentor and produce great leaders capable of managing and providing effective leadership to the rest of the people around them.
YIET, through its programs aim to enable a series of small changes that eventually link together to strengthen the fabric of the local community and economy, including bringing the current generation out of poverty.
Till date, YIET through its 3 programs has enabled the following progress;
85 new businesses have started through its VSLA.
292 individuals have been trained Financial Literacy and leadership.
166 young girls have received Education on Reproductive Health trained in making Reusable Menstrual Pads and other Menstrual Hygiene products.
