Help to Build Earthquake Resistant School in Nepal

Hello,

We are a group of four volunteers, Rhys, Norbert, Honza & Terezia.

We are working with an amazing organisation called Yes To Change

volunteering in a small village a few hours outside of Kathmandu called Bangthali.

YTC independently started and funded by founders Bijay Khadka from Nepal and Enrique Sainz De Baranda from Spain, set up as a joint initiative in 2012.

Together they have been helping local people on a massive scale ever since.

Unfortunately the first school they built was destroyed in the earthquake in 2015 after which all efforts were focused on providing relief to people in surrounding areas and helping the survivors, providing them with temporary living structures, materials and food.

Now they are working to build a new and improved school using Earth bag technology that will make it earthquake resistant.

Our group is currently working to clear the remains of the old school in preparation for the new building to begin.

There is a lot of work to be done and many different materials are required to complete the project.

The site is over 2000m up in the mountains in an area heavily affected by the earthquake, so bringing materials up the damaged roads can be quite a costly complex challenge.

Attached you can see the full plans for the school as well as a break down of the costs for all the different materials. You can see exactly where your donation will go and if you'd prefer you can take your pick and purchase some of the materials directly and together we can arrange for the delivery to the site. We also really need more hands to come and help! Everyone is welcome here, we require people with useful skills and relevant experience. But even if you consider yourself unskilled your more than welcome to come along there is always something to do! As the project progresses there will be a bigger variety of jobs and more people required.

As a volunteer myself I honestly could not recommend this opportunity to get involved in some truly amazing work any more highly!

We work hard but we also get plenty of time to experience the real Nepal. We stay in wonderful, clean and comfortable accommodation provided by YTC living in the heart of the village alongside Bijay and his brother, surrounded by beautiful nature and scenery with incredible views of the Himalayas just 15 mins walk up the hill. The villagers all welcome us like family, all taking turns to cook us tasty, healthy proper Nepalese food, with at least 3 hearty meals a day you will not go hungry here!

We have started this page between us to try raise some funds through our own circles of family and friends. As you can see there is a long way to go and we are just asking for a small amount to purchase some of the priorities needed to progress with the work.
