xYUGOx is a docu series, about hardcore punk Straight Edge scene in the ex Yugoslavian countries. It’s about Edge, veganism, sexism, nationalism, attitudes, opinions, concerts, bands, etc...
Straight Edge (SxE) is a movement created in reaction to the nihilistic view of the punk scene in America in the late 70's, in which people do not consume alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, and sex with different partners for physical enjoyment. Straight Edge emerged as an alternative to mass, self destructiveness and nihilism that appeared on the scene at the time. X-es are beginning to be drawn on the hands, which were a marker for those who were not allowed to serve drinks in bars due to age.
Trailer for xYUGOx:
xYUGOx, is a music documentary series that talks about a different perspective on hardcore punk - Straight Edge.
In the 1990s, people in the Balkans heard about an American movement called Straight Edge via fanzine. How it was accepted in the area of the former Yugoslavia countries in the 90s and how it is accepted today, we will find out by following the only active Straight Edge band in the area and through many interviews with people who know Edge the best, by living this kind of life. Yugo is short from Yugoslavia (referring ex Yugoslavian countries). X represents Straight Edge.
xYUGOx is not only a documentary series, it is a kind of movement, awakening and story about the punk scene and everything that revolves around it. The story of hardcore punk, edge, veganism, sexism, nationalism, bands and music! A series that breaks down stereotypes about punks and Straight Edge people. A series that encourages you to think with your head, to take a stand for yourself and your views, not be afraid to bring them up, and it's okay to say NO to some things.
WHO IS PAVLE?
You can see part of his story in the ‘’pilot’’ episode where he explains some things:
..but here you go, a short one here as well.
Pavle (aka Vjetroslav Prdinski https://www.instagram.com/vjetroslavxprdinski/) is 24 years old and finishing his graduate degree in Cinematography at the Academy of Dramatic Arts. xYUGOx started out as a cinematography exercise, and later grew into much more. Since he is active in the hardcore punk scene and he already filmed a few documentary projects himself, he started this biggest one so far. Music is a big inspiration for him. He also plays drums in two bands (Left to Starve and Rules) and has been doing an acoustic music project (Park Sessions) for 6 years now. It was a matter of time before he would do something more serious about music.
He never consumed any opiates, alcohol or drugs, so he's been SxE his whole life, but formally since he was 15, when he heard about it. That's also one of the reasons he is making this project about Straight Edge.
He doesn’t want to do everything alone, so he needs some help.
Most of the xYUGOx project is DO IT YOURSELF and Pavle is director, cinematographer and editor, so he needs assistants to help him out a little bit.
xYUGOx will be an online series of many short episodes (6-12 minutes). During this campaign 5 episodes will be released, one already came out, and rest are coming out each Tuesday (starting 26th of May). There are many more episodes to go after the campaign ends - THAT PART DEPENDS A LITTLE BIT ON YOU. More money means more episodes, more interviews, more locations, cities, countries, topics..
(In addition to this series, there is also a work in progress short documentary film called "X or EX" - film about Pavle and his two friends who are, or were Straight Edge. Their everyday life, and what Edge means and represents to them and how they tackle it.)
A lot of pictures in series are animated. So far, Pavle did those animations as well.
There's also an intro and ending credit scene, very carefully filmed and edited.
Izvan Fokusa provides some equipment and gear needed for filming (https://izvanfokusa.hr/)
Along interviews, archive material is very important to show things how they looked like before. Sometimes the material is on some kind of videotape and special ('old school') technology is needed to digitize it.
Animation of archive photo:
Insert of first Croatian Straight Edge band called Clean, 1999. The video was on VHS tape:
Pavle did 85% of the whole project so far, after this campaign, he wants to give that 85% to other people and his friends to do it, because this is too big a job for only one person.
Although the production of series is not so big and demanding, it is necessary to give respect and something in return to the people who helped with the execution of it. There is also a lot of invested time, (two years so far). In addition to financial support, the most important support here is the one in which this story is shared and talked about, mentioned to friends, posted on social media, so that as many people as possible can see and know about the hardcore punk scene. Also for young people to see that it is okay to be different and not to consume opiates and drugs if you don’t want to.
WHERE DOES YOUR MONEY GO?
First - you make it clear that you want to see and spread the story of this project.
Second - your money covers the expenses for the good people who were very willing to work with me and help me make this project happen, without any of the promised fees. With donations you're helping me keep going on with this!
Third - specifically, support is needed for: camera assistant, edit assistant, audio processing, text translation and subtitling, merchandise production, and money for some film festivals. Also, I have to go to various locations, cities and states in order to film interviews. I need some money for gas and road fees, as well.
WHAT YOU GET IN RETURN?
Except personal satisfaction, you choose a package in which you get something in return as a thank you, but the most important thing is that you become a part of this story. Part of a series, part of a movement, and thank you for that.
Every donation puts you in the THANK YOU section in social media statuses, and with every physical reward, you get some stickers...
NOTE: before you place payment, in the COMMENT section write; SIZE, and DESIGN (Mr. stagediving businessman / xYUGOx logo) - do the same for other things - comment which fanzine you want or which badge color, etc.
Also, be patient and give us some time to make and send all what you order. You'll get your stuff maximum two months after the campaign ends.
PS. Have in mind the price of things is a bit higher than it would usually be at any DIY concert, because this is a funding campaign...
That's it. Hope you'll like it, and hope to see you around and talk about stuff. Follow things on social media, there will be updates and everything else. xCHEERSx!
Pavle's photo fanzines have nothing in common with the xYUGOx project, but are still worthy, and helps him get something for this project.
