About SKY

HISTORY

Founded in 1987 by sixteen-year-old Bob Nameng, Soweto Kliptown Youth (SKY) provides hope and services to some of the most neglected children in South Africa through formal and informal programs to support children and teens.  As a non-profit organization and one of the oldest surviving youth centers in Soweto. SKY has played a big-role in expanding the rich history of Kliptown where the freedom charter was adopted in 1955 June 25 the vision the document was to create unity, democracy and equality to the tribes .SKY aims to serve the mental and physical needs of the youth of Kliptown a historic suburb township of Soweto in Gauteng, South Africa.  SKY originated as an after-school program for neighborhood children who came to the center for choir sessions.  As the numbers increased, attention became focused on matters that impacted the daily lives of the children while adding drawing and reading to the program.  Activities were later expanded to include performance arts, educational programs, support groups through the activities the SKY Team empowers youth to be leaders and render life skills classes for young girls to develop personal values and qualities. Sports activities such as soccer, basketball, and cricket  teach the children assertiveness and confidence.  The organization has a strong relationship with the community and its surrounding areas and maintains a presence in order to address the challenges faced by the community in general.  The presence in the community provides the opportunity to maintain strong links at all times.  The results are obvious.  The minute you enter the community, the children are joyful and warm despite the many hardships they face every day.  They have pride, energy, and talent, and they abundantly share it with others.  Through SKY’s programs and services, they have a chance to make it.

The CEO of SKY Foundation has a vision of expanding SKY to other areas.  At present, SKY has satellites in two provinces: Kwazulu-natal, Free State and North-West Mafikeng.  Our program aimed at strengthening the relationship between young brothers and sisters of any race or tribe who are in need of development

SKY YOUTH CENTER

SKY Youth Center is located in Kliptown with a library (Learning Center), offices, tourism shop, store-rooms, and a dining hall.  Approximately 300 children are fed at the center before and after school, and before they go home.  The meals also help provide nutrition to those infected with HIV.  Often, these are the only meals the children receive.  In addition to meals, SKY teaches children about nutrition and how to be self-sufficient.  Some of the vegetables that are provided are grown at the center allowing the opportunity for the children to learn about basic farming.  In addition to the meal program, a number of programs and services are provided at the center.  A new center, located a short distance from the SKY Center, named the “Battery Centre,” formerly a facility where residents of Kliptown could purchase batteries for electricity, was donated to SKY and is currently under renovation to cater to further needs.

SKY MANAGEMENT

The management of SKY is composed of program coordinators who report to the Executive Director who, in turn, reports to the Board of Directors.  SKY’s exemplary leaders are the youth  that connects people in need to support and provide beneficial opportunities.  Members of SKY participate in the election process of the management team.

PARTNERSHIPS

The SKY Foundation desires to position itself to become key players affecting change across the nation.  Through strategic partnerships, the vision of the SKY Foundation is enhanced by not only providing programs and services to the community, but also linking the community with the greater international community.  City Year has provided a team of afterschool tutors and mentors, and through NBA Cares, the SKY youth center was funded complete with computers and a library.  A new partnership is emerging with one of the universities in South Africa.  This partnership will benefit the organization by providing management training to staff, and to enhance the broader vision of the organization.  This partnership is seen as one of the first in South Africa especially for township based organizations.

VISITORS

Visitors to Johannesburg hoping to connect with Africans will embrace the chance to visit Kliptown.  Lots of events take place at SKY.  Children will greet you with singing, dancing and smiling.  If you are lucky, you will watch one of their powerful theatre productions. You can visit with the residents, see a home, and be touched by it all.

DONORS

SKY accepts donations of all kinds, and makes a full commitment to guarantee that all donations are managed in a professional manner.  Financial and in-kind support are continuously sought to support the various programs and services.  Because of the varying needs of each program, SKY management collaborates with each donor to ensure that each program is funded equitably.

Programs and Services

SKY’s programs and services operate on a daily basis through the support of its coordinators.  During the past 20 years of existence, a relationship with the international community has developed and continues to grow.  This relationship has empowered some of SKY’s leaders in their respective fields of interest and enabled members to travel abroad to locations including Europe, the United States, and the Middle East.  These opportunities have equipped and exposed SKY to learn from others worldwide.

ADOPT-A-CHILD

Because there are no schools in Kliptown, children must travel far from their homes to attend school.  Adopt-a-Child is a program that offers children a chance to get the best education by providing free transportation, help with school fees, and lunch through the support of a sponsor, who, initially, are often visitors to SKY.  Each sponsor provides a child with school fees and lunch along with other assistance as needed.

CARING FOR THE AGED

We believe that the aged are the powerhouse of knowledge and represent the past.  Without them there would be no present or future.  Therefore, we care for our aged by providing transportation to and from pension locations, grocery shopping, offering physical and emotional support in difficult times, and assisting with space for prayer meetings during the week.  We also sponsor a program for those affected by HIV/AIDS.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

SKY is focused on supporting the educational development of everyone who is associated with the organization from its management team to each individual member.  Through the computer lab and library, individuals are able to advance both their skills and knowledge within the organization.  Through the computer lab, unemployed youth are provided basic computer lessons.

HISTORY OF LEARNING CENTRE

SKY Learning Centre is an Educational Hub located in Kliptown, The programmes of the learning centre were first implemented under the shack in 80’s and 90’s. Learners and students of the community used to attend daily afternoon educational programmes, as the numbers increased, attention became focused on matters affecting the learners in education, most of the learners were coming from disadvantaged background, and participants were provided: stationary, school uniform and stipends for their educational needs. Our Educational Programs aimed at strengthening the positive vibrant mind-set of any race or tribe who are in need of educational development.

Around 2004 City Year provided a team of afterschool tutors and mentors, and through NBA Cares, the SKY Learning Centre was funded complete with computers and learning facility.  A new partnership has emerged with one of the universities in South Africa.  The partnership has benefit the organization by providing management training to staff, and to enhance the broader vision of the organization.  This partnership is seen as one of the first in South Africa especially for township based organizations. “In 2009, a child studying late at night with a candle and she fell asleep and left the candle burning; eventually the Learning Centre accidentally caught fire and it got burned down”, witness related: SKY resources turned to ashes.

In 2010 the facility was re-constructed, private sectors provided books and shelves for structuring the Learning Centre again. READ EDUCATIONAL PROJECT and BOOK AID donated more than 700 books for the library, the support from sponsor’s inspired young readers. Early 2011 Zimi Nakeni and Siyabulela Soko became responsible for the library and initiated book club program which enabled to advance learning skills of young readers.

In 2013 the founder of RENC CREW EDUCATIONAL ORGANISATION dealt with strategizing educational programs: more programs were initiated for all ages.

He initiated educational programs that satisfied learners needs, such as Homework’s programs, Book Club, Educational Discussions, Science Team, Bible Class, Literacy Campaign, Confidential Class and Theatre Classes in March 2013 SKY Learning Centre was first recognized by Department of Education. SKY Learning Centre has been stable so far, educational programs are sustainable and are to serve all the people who seeks for better education.
