Hi everyone! We are a team of BA Final Year Film students from NTU School of Art, Design & Media looking to fund our Thesis Undergraduate Film titled Writings On The Wall, inspired by a true Singaporean story. It would mean the world to us if you could support us by contributing to our crowdfunding campaign, and help us in our journey towards making our collaborative creative vision a reality!

Writings On The Wall - Our Story

Arul, a 15 year old Indian boy, is forced into being a runner. Ah Song (60), an ex-prison guard comes home from his son’s funeral to find out that his house is being harassed by loan sharks. Amidst the predicament of unsettled debts and unfulfilled relationships, the stories of two different individuals meet at the ramshackle corridors of Geylang.

Entrapped in the world of relentless debtors and runners, Arul is forced into a situation to help Ah Song unravel the truth. As they embark on their journey, both characters slowly peel away their hard exteriors and begin to understand the depth of each other’s situation, ultimately accepting their differences to work together to finish what they started.

Set in the year 2008, WRITINGS ON THE WALL is a 20-minute crime thriller-drama that takes place over the course of one night. The film shies away from the glitz and glamour of Singapore, and explores the underbelly of the country, touching on themes such as money, race and fatherhood to show how two broken characters from different walks of life meet and find kinship with each other.

Why This Film?

(Our Director's Statement)

Hi there, thanks so much for clicking and showing interest in our film! My name is Ravin and as the writer and director of WOTW, the story comes from a part of my childhood that I never thought I'd want to put on display. But as I grew up, I felt the need to open up to spark conversations among local and international viewers about the rampant underworld in this country, and give viewers a glimpse into the underbelly of Singapore, which is often swept under the rug - and what better way to do this than through a short film?

The two characters in the film are the two voices in my head when my father was involved with the loan shark syndicate in Singapore. On one hand, I despised the sight of my dad, but on the other, I was trying to understand why he did what he did. Written from a minority’s point of view, I wanted to give a very raw and realistic take on the characters, and their inner development as they learn more about themselves and each other over the span of 1 night. This is intended to be portrayed through the gradual change of their attitudes towards each other, including the use of crude language, to give depth to the world that I was trying to portray- a world that included nuances of passive racism, and its effect on individuals.

The team and I are extremely passionate to make this story come to life. We want to spark conversation about income disparity and the prevalence of illegal money laundering activities, and use a creative medium to give voice to lower income families in countries with rapid growing economies, such as Singapore. Through the film, we want to shine a spotlight and juxtapose the often portrayed glamorous city-state with its harsh reality – focusing on the lifestyles of people living in the slums of Singapore.

How Can You Help?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team has been facing multiple challenges in trying to give life to the story, including having additional compulsory safety equipment to procure, as well as measurements and restrictions to uphold for the production. As such, our current estimated production expenditure is SGD 11,000.

It would mean so much to us if you could contribute to the film and help us make this film a reality. Any amount, big or small, would make a huge difference. Your donations will contribute to:

1. Cast Fees

2. Equipment and Location Rental

3. Art Direction (Set Design, Wardrobe, and Props)

4. Meals for the Crew and Cast Members

5. Transportation Costs for Equipment, Art and Manpower

6. COVID-19 Safety Equipment

For more information on where your donation will go to, do drop us an email at [email protected] and we will be more than happy to share! Do also share our campaign and spread the word to your friends and family - every share would mean a lot to us :)
