I have a writers group here in my hometown, and we've discussed this over a period of about 6 months. This is my 'dream':
I would like to start a business to sell new books, and feature local writers from the tri-state (Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York) area to help them get started on their literary journey of becoming a writer. Eventually, I would like to have writers from other areas want to showcase their work through the store. I hope to get some support from larger publishing companies in getting these writers the critique they need to improve their own talent.
I would also like to offer writing classes, reading hours for youngsters and would feature little vignettes monthly to showcase new authors and new books being offered through our store. Bringing in talented writers for workshops would also be an option.
I feel this will help young local writers who have a desire to see their writing published and for sale in an actual bookstore. It will also instill in youngsters the wonder of the printed word and how important using 'imagination' is for following a story, how important reading is to one's mental health.
There is also enough room to have a 'private' area, where people can come and get help with their reading skills or learn to read without being embarrassed about being in a 'classroom' full of twenty or thirty people.
Eventually, I would like to offer publishing on a small scale for authors who don't want to go the way of self-publishing. I would like to offer them the experience of being published and what is entailed by doing the work that is needed.
By doing so, we would help save a historical building, as we would use that as our storefront. Too many of our historical buildings (many have been here since the mid-1800's or earlier) have been lost to parking areas. This building is too beautiful to be destroyed.
