Hey there!
My name is Will Bessant. I'm 15 years old!
In July 2020, myself and 9 students from my school will be participating in a trip to Borneo, run by World Challenge.
The main purpose of this trip isn't to have a luxury holiday, stay in the finest hotels or dine in the best restaurants. It's about helping, exploring and going beyond your limits.
When we finally make it to Borneo, our trip is planned into four different sections:
1. First we get a few days to adapt to our new surroundings.
2. The trekking stage allows us to lead a trek through jungle, desert or mountainous terrain.
3. We undertake a community project, which provides the opportunity to mix with locals and give something beneficial back!
4. Finally, we get some time for rest and recreation. We can relax, go sightseeing or undertake an activity such as white water rafting!

Recently, our teacher asked us to come up with a goal for the trip. It could be anything, so I chose to reach the summit of Mount Kinabalu. I have always been an adventurous boy and reaching the summit of Mount Kinabalu (which is a great landmark of Borneo) would be an unforgettable experience for me. But that's only the trekking part of the trip, there’s plenty more!
The community project is the part of the trip that I’m most looking forward to. While I’m there, I want to make a difference. Whether it’s mental or physical, I don't want to leave my footprints without helping someone or something.
While we are in Borneo we will be meeting a local tribe. We may be teaching them English, playing games with them or building something useful for their community. Last year’s participants built a water line … for the first time the tribe had flowing water.
The locals won’t be the only people we will be helping. In fact, we will be helping the orangutans, We plan to build shelters for them to encourage them to move back into the area. Orangutans are currently being forced to leave their homes because their habitats are destroyed for palm oil. Saving one orangutan may change my life!
To finish off the trip, we will have a chance to relax from our hard work and do some sightseeing.
Half of the "challenge" of this trip is to raise the total amount of £4850; which covers, food, accommodation, travel within Borneo and flights. We each have our own ways of raising money for our trip, such as selling things to friends and family, busking, trivia nights and a lot more!
And that’s why I need your help!
If you could spare £20 (or even more) you could help me undertake the trip of a lifetime! I would be super-appreciative, and it will not go to waste. Please help me make a difference!
My main goal for the trip is to have no regrets, but mostly to have fun!
Thank you,
Will Bessant
