My name is Emmanuella and I am a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) at Methodist Wesley Methodist School, in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia. My job includes co-teaching English classes to Forms 1 through 4 (ages 13-16), facilitating speaking workshops, coaching teams, assisting clubs, interacting with students, sharing about my experiences living in the U.K. , and much more. No two days are the same and I feel very thankful to be given an opportunity to learn so much about my students, school, and community.

Fulbright ETAs are also responsible for hosting English Camps, which can focus on any theme or topic-- the only unifying factor is the use of English language for facilitation. These camps give students an opportunity to build their confidence using English in a nonacademic environment.

On September 26-29th, 2019, I will be co-hosting a National Women's Empowerment Summit in Malaysia's capital city, Kuala Lumpur. This English camp will bring more than 100 girls from 24 schools across 7 states in Malaysia together for four days of community building, English language practice, and of course, fun.

Throughout the Summit, attendees will listen to inspirational women from around the globe speak, learn about issues of gender inequality, participate in interdisciplinary discussions, and meet girls from around the country. After the camp they will work together to implement a project in their own community. This conference presents a unique opportunity for my students to practice their English language skills, experience a totally new city hundreds of miles from their home, and build community with like-minded young women.

It is my goal to make this trip financially accessible for every student selected through the application process. The U.S. Embassy has generously provided a grant that covers almost all of our camp logistics (lodging, food, materials) and the MakeItRight Movement has donated a venue for our camp activities. However, it is not enough to cover all the camp expenses, and participating ETA's are responsible for finding funding for their transportation. My group will need to Travel to Kuala Lumpur for the camp, so it will be significantly expensive than some of the other schools that may be able to take their buses which our school lack.

My personal fundraising goal is $850 which will cover 30 students transport and camp registration fee.

4 Malaysian Ringgit is equal to 1 US Dollar, so a little goes a very long way.

Thank you very much for reading this far! Please let me know if you have any questions about the camp or other ETA programming. Our organizing committee is working tirelessly to make sure this camp happens, and we are so thankful for your support!

P.S. If you donate, please email or direct message me your home address so we can write you a thank you note!

Help spread the word!
