Women's Initiative for Self-Empowerment (WISE) was founded in 1999 in reaction to the
high prevalence of domestic violence in Ghana.
WISE was established to respond to the increase in reports of violence
against women and children, limited public awareness and collaboration among the
few organizations set up to provide services, and the lack of counselling and
support programs to meet the psychological needs of survivors of violence. To
meet needs not addressed by existing services, WISE has provided individual and
group counselling services for survivors of violence and training in counselling
and support for direct service providers. WISE set up the WISE Wellness Centre
in Accra to provide survivors of violence with counselling, medical, legal and
other socio-economic support services..
Our VISION
To break the cycle of violence and sexual assault against
women and children.
Our MISSION
To provide holistic and
sustainable support services to women and children survivors of domestic
violence and sexual assault; educate the public-at-large; advocacy with critical
stakeholders; and training to service providers on the issues of domestic
violence and sexual assault.
To work from a womanist
perspective (i.e. one that promotes freedom of choice and equality for all).
Our GOALS
Provide direct support services
and protection for survivors. Services such as emotional support, advocacy,
referrals and information to battered women and children who call or visit WISE
or its partners.
Development and provide training
that address needs of survivors for our staff and other service providers who
work with survivors of violence.
Educate women's groups,
professionals, politicians and the public on issues of women and children abuse.

Share information on best
practices on women and children issues with other groups and individuals working
in the same field.
Advocate for development and
change in social systems so that these systems become accountable, effective and
accessible for abused women and children.
