My name is Taelo Mengwai from South Africa, Johannesburg in the small township - Vosloorus (East Rand). I am a recent University of Witwatersrand Honours degree graduate in Construction Management (2020). I also hold an undergraduate degree in Construction Studies obtained in 2019.
I returned for my Honours degree studies last year (2020) after completing my undergraduate studies because I aspired to be junior construction/project manager for high-profiled construction establishments in South Africa and abroad, which required me to have postgrad qualification. By God's grace I managed to do well. Financial hurdles stole away the joy and pleasure of finishing such a milestone at one of top African University Institutions. I never thought that I would one day be a product of such an institution, coming from a small township were dreams and ambitions to become anything massive is impeded and veiled by limited resources and the amount of daily information consumed. As it stands, I owe the University R122 750. 00.
I did not have funding for my 2020 academic year when I enrolled at the University and I therefore acknowledged debt with the belief and hope to acquire a bursary before the year had ended. I had hoped to secure it over the course of the year. Covid-19 pandemic happened, prompting lockdown regulations which made life hard at anything. As such, numerous bursary/ scholarship funding applications were made but I was unsuccessful. As an orphan, for financial help on minor things and surviving, my siblings and I are dependent on my lil' sister whom barely earns enough to help towards my fees.
