Hello and welcome to my fundraising page!

My name is Amaranta. I’m a 21-year-old biology student from Estonia who’s fascinated with zoology and animal ecology. What better way to see different animals than to travel to the Amazonian rainforest?

I simply cannot wait for summer, as I’ve been accepted as a volunteer in Esperanza Verde - a wildlife rescue center in the Amazon basin of Peru. The project consists of both wildlife rescue and rainforest protection. However, I really need your help to put that dream into practice.

Where will I go and what will I do?

I will be spending two months in the middle of the rainforest, where Esperanza Verde runs a wildlife rescue center. Most of the animals there have been saved from illegal pet trade. The ones that are fit to be rehabilitated will eventually be released back into the wild. Unfortunately some of the animals have become too accustomed to humans for their own sake. When that has happened, Esperanza Verde will provide a forever-home for them that’s as similar to their natural habitat as possible.

Volunteers carry out different tasks like cleaning enclosures and feeding the animals, helping out with the various construction projects, mapping the area and even participating in their reforestation project.

Where does the money go?

Most people assume that volunteering automatically means that all costs are covered, but that is far from the truth. The costs associated with volunteer work depend on the nature of the project.

Esperanza Verde is a fully non-profit organisation and wouldn’t be able to only run with volunteers providing free labour - some things require money. Both the humans and animals living there need to be accommodated and fed. They’re always in need of building materials and supplies. That’s why volunteering costs money, not only in Esperanza Verde but most other places. I will need a total of 700€ to stay there for 2 months.

In addition to participation fees, travelling 12,000 km (that’s 7,400 miles) from home isn’t cheap. Plane tickets from Tallinn to Lima and back will be around 850€. I also need about 100€ worth of vaccines to be protected from all kinds of diseases you can catch in the American tropics. The rest will cover travel insurance and some supplies.
