What is Haidong Gumdo anyway?

It is a Korean Sword Martial art that translates to "The way of the enlightened sword." It dates to AD331 when Master Sul Bong established a Dojang in the Baekdoo Mountains of Kokuryo. In 1982, President Jeong Ho Kim established his first Dojang under the name Haidong Gumdo and later established the World Haidong Gumdo Federation in 1996. Currently, Haidong Gumdo is one of the world’s fastest growing martial arts with over 1.5 million practitioners in over 50 countries.

Our Whakatane Haidong Gumdo Club, which is affiliated with Haidong Gumdo New Zealand and the largest NZ club, has four members who will be representing Haidong Gumdo Team New Zealand at World Mulimpia on July 11th-19th, 2019 in South Korea.

We unfortunately could not raise enough funds for the seven members who wanted to go, but are very grateful to be in the position to send four from our club!

Our Club Values are to provide whanau a safe place to have fun and be challenged physically, mentally and spiritually. These values are important to us, and when you donate you are supporting our whanau to get to Korea.

Who is going to World Mulimpia in South Korea?

Danyel Degenhardt - Black Black 1st Dan and Head Instructor

We are training hard to compete in a variety of events including individual and team patterns, individual and team paper cutting and bamboo cutting.

This is only the second time New Zealand will be represented in World Mulimpia! We are training hard to show the world what we are capable of.

#30000likes Social Media Campaign

Do you have Instagram or Facebook? Please follow @WhkHaidongGumdo on Instagram and Whakatane Haidong Gumdo on Facebook in order to support our #30,000 likes for $30,000 campaign.

The seven members going to Worlds are regular daily videos and inspirational quotes in order to give you a sneak peak of what we do, and what Haidong Gumdo means to us. We want you to be a part of our whanau. We want you to learn and grow with us as we work towards our goal of competing at Worlds and beyond.

With our community, we will then approach companies who have similar values to us for sponsorship in order to provide our whanau with even more ways to have fun and be challenged physically, mentally and spiritually.

Sponsorship

Our club has a comprehensive Sponsorship Package with a goal of matching our target audience with companies that share values with us. There are two main areas we are focusing on for sponsorship.

1) If your business is in the Bay Of Plenty Area, especially Whakatane, we want you to support local and come join our whanau. You'll get local press coverage and be a part of promoting a developing and exciting martial art in your community.

2) I believe our Korean Martial Art creates an authentic link for New Zealand businesses that trade within Korea and vice versa. In 2015 before the NZ-Korea FTA there was $4 billion in two-way trade, and this number has increased by over 150% since then. Our club is positioning itself as an advocate of trade between our two countries.

Without Korea, the Martial Art we love would not exist. It is this essential connection that we have in common with many New Zealand businesses that rely on Korea. I am committed to our club, our country and promoting NZ-Korea Trade.

"The more we're all successful, the more we're all successful" - Jason Linett
