My name is Sanija and I am working hard to become independent again!
So here’s my story.
I was an active kid, I was taking part in many after school activities – starting from dancing and swimming and ending with trampolining or trampoline gymnastics. Later in my teens trampolining took over and I began to train professionally. I absolutely loved it, the freedom and adrenaline you get in the air is indescribable.
But once in a competition something went wrong and I landed on my head on the trampoline, breaking my neck and getting a spinal cord injury, which left me partially paralyzed. I was 13 then.
Now after a couple years I’m 20 years old and getting around in a wheelchair, but that doesn’t hold me back from living life. No matter how life is, you have to make the best out of it. And I’m trying to do that no matter how hard it gets sometimes. I’m studying computer science in University of Latvia, occasionally playing some sports like wheelchair rugby and have bungee jumped (yup, still love that feeling).
As I said, I’m getting around in a wheelchair all the time, but there’s a problem. In the country I live – Latvia – the environment isn’t very wheelchair friendly. There are high curbs and sidewalks not always have a lowered part where you could easily get on, so I have to ask someone for help. Public transport is accessible, but it also has a steep ramp to get in, so help is needed again. Also my hands are pretty week due to my injury and getting around in town is hard, everything consists of upgoing slopes it seems!? That las one was a bit of exaggeration. But it’s true – with a bear eye it’s hardto see, but when getting around in a wheelchair you can feel it very well. So guess what happens then – I need someone to push me around. So – help is needed again. And I could keep counting.
The thing is, I strive to be independent again soooo bad. And I need some help to achieve it.
The device SmartDrive MX2+ is a power-assist device for manual wheelchairs that allows you to go up hills and ramps, over thick carpet, long distances, and essentially, anywhere where it is hard to push. By using it I could go to university by myself, without asking for help all the time. I could go to a supermarket to buy food by myself or just go for a “walk”!
SmartDrive costs money I don’t have. But it would turn my life around by 180 degrees. Please help me live an independent life again! It would mean the world to me!
