Hi there animal lovers! So early last year I moved back home after graduation. Home is a small rural town in the Eastern Cape called Matatiele. I struggled with finding employment within my field and my mental health started taking strain. At that point with not having much friends it got very lonely at home. I live in a township and one would often find “stray” (they actually have owners but they just don’t take care of them💔) dogs digging in rubbish bins and then the whole block would filled with garbage before the waste truck arrives. Ever since I started feeding them, the amount of garbage in our neighborhood has decreased drastically. For a long time I asked my mom for a pet to help me with my emotions but she refused because unfortunately our house isn’t fenced like most houses in the area.

Then a dog named Jack/Jacky/ Jake caught my attention. She was from the house opposite ours and wasn’t in the best of shapes, my biggest guess was that she was hungry and thirsty and generally not taken care of like most dogs in the neighborhood. So I started calling Jacky to give her some of my leftovers. I then started collecting leftover on a regular basis. My girl started getting excited and happier when she saw me because those leftovers would probably be the only meal for the day or the only meal after several days. I didn’t know that by doing this I would start a lowkey animals shelter.

I saw that the leftovers thing was not working and I started buying an 8kg bag of dog food with money from my part time job. Little did I realize that this would cause a ripple effect. It started from 8kg a month to 2 8kg bags a month to now about 40kg of dog food a month. How did we get to 40kg?! Well, my guess is Jacky started telling her other friends 😂. It went from Jacky (my pioneer queen), then Peanut (unfortunately peanut disappeared a few months after), the fiesty rascal Black Bear, and the alpha senior, Lady. Having four dogs that I was feeding regularly meant more dog food and Lady being the largest of them all meant more portions for her. Sis Jacky gave birth last year to 13 puppies! Yes, 13! One passed and Puppinski was the only puppy left and the others were given away. Little did I know that the most smartest, spunkiest, vocal and energetic granddog was about to join the crew.

As of today today there is Jacky, Puppinski, Lady, Black Bear, Toto, Black Bear’s boyfriend and 2 other regulars (I don’t know their names but they are always here). I’m currently feeding 8 dogs on a regular basis and other random ones that pass by.

These dogs have saved me in ways I never thought they would. I have become lighter in spirit and they have been the best companions. They have also been the best of security guards as at night I hear them barking when anyone comes too close to my house. They have grown on my mom and grandmother as well.

Sister J, gave birth to 11 puppies last week Monday 😭❤️ and I bought a blanket because of the harsh weather conditions as she dug a hole as her nursery . My biggest concern is that Puppinski is 6 months old but hasn’t been vaccinated. I hereby request any form of donation no matter how small it will make a difference. I have spoken to the local state vet and vaccination and deworming is R100 per dog and spaying is R450 and castration is R350. I would really love for Jacky to get spayed as well. These dogs are not only forms of security for the neighborhood but also our companions.

These dogs have been my light and my love. They have saved me so many times. People would ask me why I just don’t get a dog of my own and I always tell them that I already have my pack and it’s these dogs. I would like to continue giving these dogs love and ensuring that they have a better life. My ultimate dream is that every household have a bowl of water and food outside for the less fortunate dogs to feed.

Thank yo
