“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” Robert Swan, OBE

This March 13th, 2022, a lifelong dream is about to come true. Not only will my son Dylan and I travel to one of the most remote and untouched places left on the planet, but we’ll also have the opportunity to learn among changemakers at such a crucial time. Our goal is to make a positive impact on the environment when we return home.

We’ve been selected to join the 2041 ClimateForce Antarctic Expedition, led by polar explorer Robert Swan (OBE) and Jeff Bonaldi of Explorer’s Passage.

We’re beyond lucky. But this is not a holiday. It’s an immersive sustainability leadership and climate change education program.

In March 2022, we’ll join a diverse group of 150 people from around the world, participating in Robert Swan’s world-renowned Leadership-On-The-Edge program. We’ll be accompanied by experts of climate change, sustainability and renewable energy use.

The 12-day expedition will take us from Ushuaia in Argentina, across The Drake Passage and on south to Antarctica. The trip will equip us with the tools and knowledge we need, to share and practise meaningful change in our day to day lives and arm us with the education and skills to bring these messages into our communities when we return back home. If Dylan and I can learn how to help in the preservation of Antarctica, perhaps we can help teach others how to help in the preservation of our planet.

What will we be doing?

We’ll be aboard the expedition ship for nine days. We’ll rise early to listen to climate change lectures, take part in field excursions and join lively discussions on the future of our planet. We’ll become part of a tight-knit community that will go on to help amplify the importance of the year 2041 and The Foundation’s mission to preserve Antarctica.

Why 2041?

Antarctica is currently designated as a “natural reserve, devoted to peace and science". But In the year 2041, the fate of Antarctica will be decided as The Antarctic Treaty will be re-negotiated.

As I write this, there are just 18 years, 11 months and 11 days left until that deadline.

The 2041 Mission was founded by polar explorer and environmentalist Robert Swan, OBE, the first person to walk to both the North and South Poles. Robert has dedicated his life to the preservation of Antarctica through the promotion of recycling, renewable energy and sustainability to combat the effects of climate change. Robert’s 2041 Mission is committed to the preservation of the polar regions with a focus on engaging businesses, communities and individuals on climate science, personal leadership and the promotion of sustainable practises.

To date, Robert Swan has inspired more than 4000 Alumni on 22 Expeditions over 14 years.

How can you help?

We humbly ask for your support. You have your own children and adventures to save for. We understand that. But by donating what you can, you’ll not only be contributing to the various costs involved to get us there, you’ll also be supporting the ongoing efforts to inspire and educate countless new climate change fighters and most importantly, you'll play your own part in the preservation of a continent.

If you are based in Singapore, or prefer to arrange a direct and easier way to send through your donation, just drop me a message. You can then leave a comment with your offline donation on this page after if you wish.

What do you get in return?

If you’re a friend, we want you to experience the program with us. We want to bring you along with us to virtually “Jump In Our Backpack”! We'll be sharing some creative and fun ideas with you via email. And of course, we want to bore you with our endless after dinner ramblings and slide shows for years to come.

If you’re a company, we’d really love to discuss how our experiences can align with your values and CSR objectives. Perhaps you have a product you’d like us to take along, use and promote.

Who are we?

I’m Dylan, I’m 13-years old, British and currently studying for my iGCSEs next year at Dover Court International School in Singapore. My main subjects are Music, Visual Arts, Geography and Mandarin and I really enjoy Science. I guess my favourite things are drumming, trampolining, my mountain bike and video editing.

I have a younger brother Blake who is 11yrs old, who will be helping me plan and build a Minecraft map of the expedition.

I know that my generation faces a difficult future, but I don’t really know what I can do to make more of a difference yet. At home, we recycle and try not to use plastic. Last year we gave up our car and both Blake and I cycle as much as we can. If we do need to use a taxi we book a “GrabGreen”.

I know this trip will be amazing and will help us understand more about climate change and give me some ideas on what we can do to help. I also plan to bring lots of questions from my classmates to ask, and come back with some amazing videos to share with them and Blake too.

He’d really like to come too. He loves taking photos! He wants to feel the cold, see icebergs, the hundreds of stars at night and see penguins up close in real life with me. If we can’t get him there this time, he says he will still support us with fun fundraising fun ideas with his classmates, and I hope we can go back together one day.

(See photo: Dylan & Blake on cycling during their 2041/20 Challenge)

I’m Sammy, I grew up in Hong Kong. I’m a working-mum. I spent many years promoting music artists across Southeast Asia. Before that.. I was once a keen photographer and student at Bournville College of Art & Design.

As a parent, I’m looking for a personal “mum win”. I hope that Dylan will return enlightened and share a new-found passion. That after the difficulty of two years of lockdowns and screen-time and faced with a future in the metaverse, he will find a way out of his virtual classrooms and playgrounds and realise how stunning the real world is.

As Jacques Cousteau said, “We must go see it for ourselves.”

As a photographer, my goal is to return with a portfolio of images to share with you. I’ll dust off my old NikonFM SLR and load up some 35mm film. I’m really excited but a little nervous to get back behind the lens again in such a precious part of the world.

It would also be an honour to try my hand at documenting the team’s journey, and hopefully come back and hand print some memorable stills to share with you. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I’m looking forward to unplugging from the noise of daily life and up-skilling on climate change and sustainable issues. I don’t know enough beyond the scary headlines.

If I can help enable one - or even both my boys - to get to Antarctica to see with their own eyes, I think that “mum-win” will be well-deserved.

Additional contributions

We’ll pay forward a token amount from each of your donations to a selection of regional and local community charities - to be confirmed - we will also be contributing to them ourselves. Among others, we’re currently considering:

Long term, I also plan to develop ideas for fundraisers to help Raise Awareness Through Culture For Climate and Sustainability with support from artists and the music industry.
