Help girls in Nepal to provide sanitary pads during menstruation

Update posted by Anita Silwal On Oct 03, 2015

I am Anita Silwal, a journalist, actress and social worker from Nepal. Please join and support my initiation to let live girls healthy and safe in Nepal, which is just hit by a devastating earthquake and trying to stand again in terms of development, health and prosperity.

Menstruation is a natural healthy occurrence in the adolescent girls. It is the key determinant of reproduction. In fact, menstruation is a blessing. Unfortunately the least developed and under developed countries are still not able to overcome with their traditional thoughts and practices of treating girls inhumanely while they menstruate.

In Nepal, girls are exiled or secluded in the dark room during their menstruation and are not aware of the menstrual hygiene practice and management. Girls are locked up in the room and not allowed to look at mirror, sun and speak loudly. They are provided with the cloth pieces or rags. Some girls even use newspaper. They are even unaware of the use of sanitary pads. Because of the personal preference, economic status, culture, traditions, beliefs and other restrictions girls do manage their menstrual days with the methods that could be unhygienic or inconvenient.

Due to economic and cultural limitations there is a widespread use of the unsanitary absorbents and inadequate washing and drying of the absorbents across the country. The clothes use as absorbent is washed and dried indoor due to restrictions and taboos. The improper menstrual health management leads to the widespread of the reproductive tract infection. In Nepal, it is reported that at least 30% of girls miss their school (i.e. 14% of the study in a week) during period days each month. They have a feeling of fear and shame due to the leakage and harassment. Girls are not aware of the use of sanitary pads. The women believe that it is unhealthy to use sanitary pads in compare to clothes.

I am commencing this individual project to raise awareness for the use of sanitary pads. In Nepal, condoms are available for free of cost but it saddens me when girls are unaware and inaccessible to the minimum requirement of hygiene during menstruation. The school going girls are not able to afford sanitary pads. This project will focus on menstrual hygiene practice by providing them sanitary kit and aware to unlock the traditional beliefs by conducting workshop and training in coordination with local volunteers and community health posts.

I, humbly request you to donate and support my mission to let feel girls confident and blessed when they menstruate so they don?t miss their school and be proud of their womanhood.

Join my initiation and support to change the agonizing situation of the girls in Nepal. I want all the girls adopting hygienic practices attending school during menstruation. Let?s welcome womanhood, aware woman and contribute towards their healthy and pleasant period. Donate this initiation to welcome and bless womanhood. Each donation will be mentioned in the website and facebook page.
